Just saw a documentary on Solitary confinement. Wow is it a terrible place to be in and it really shows how they make you crazy. Shoving poop between the doors, cutting yourself for attention, and just going ape mode. The crazier you get the more time you spend there and you get sent to a mental institution then more time in a the prison. What's your opinion on Solitary confinement? Should we have it? |

Not sure, in some ways depending on the length of time it can be more awful than execution so I don't think it serves well as a punishment in a prison for starting a fight or something but people on death row could be put in solitary instead perhaps? Though better they just be executed and money stops being spent on them anyway. I'm not sure solitary really works for anything other than making people go mental anyway so it seems sort of pointless in some ways. Anyone let out is just going to be erratic, possibly dangerous. |

If I was put into solitary confinement, I'm curious as to how I'd deal with it. I think the toilet makes or breaks it, cause if I don't have a toilet I think i'd go crazy over the stench and the sight of my own feces in the room. Otherwise I think I'd be okay, since I like solitude. |

I guess that is worse than any prison. Human race dont like solitude, we are talkative persons. I also esperienced the so called effects of "cabin fever" when I was studying for the finals in winter at the apartman 8th floor, without any social contact for weeks, other than that I went to the shop for food and something. So solitary confinement is damn bad .....I would probably go crazy as the main guy in the movie so called Shining |

Emmeth, I can agree with your points. However, there is a difference between our solitude and solitude in a confined room. You don't have any sort of communication. It's just you and your cell. No phone, no computer, no nothing. I think we would start to lose it no matter how strong and mentally prepared we are. I'm definitely curious to see how the experience is personally. Am I really that strong to overcome the mental issues that will arise, or do I only THINK that now as I have all this freedom and communication. |

What Ginyu said. Extended solitary confinement can only serve to debilitate the prisoner's mental state. Isn't part of a prison's purpose to reform criminals? Maybe the type of criminals who end up in solitary aren't really prone to being reformed, but solitary confinement definitely wouldn't help that cause. Then again, I don't know enough about prisons to really have an opinion on it. I imagine that there are some prisoners who would be so dangerous that solitary confinement might be the only course of action to keep them from harming other prisoners, or guards. |

It's there to protect other prisoners and staff more than it is there as a punishment. I'm not really sure what else can be done short of keeping them anaesthetised. |

Give it a bed, toilet, sink and maybe a few books and it should be suitable really, I see the need for it, to protect the other prisoners. All you really need to do is deprive them of the freedom to use the rest of the prison, I doubt they care much for social chat if they've done something to warrant a trip to solitary. You also can't reform someone who is unwilling to be reformed, for some, it's not possible to change their way of thinking, if it was, the world would be a nicer place. |
