I am of course referring to this wonderful story: http://www.usmagazine.com/celebrity-news/news/fifth-grade-teacher-wears-blackface-for-kanye-west-costume-photo-20152610 Teacher is being investigated because he wore "blackface" for a costume of Kanye West and that's automatically racist apparently. For a start, that's make up to make him look like a person of colour blackface is a completely different, definitely racist thing. If a white kid wants to dress up as Obama or Nick Fury...what's wrong with that? Are they racist when they probably don't even know what racism is? Of course not. Dressing up as a minstrel on the other hand then most likely their parents are racist or very stupid and don't get that it's racist. ISocial media posts about this seem to blow up with the typical comments of "You are white you can't possibly have a say in our struggle" Or my favourite, in reference to the much loved movie that is White Chicks "Black people can't be racist you have to be privileged to be racist" Which goes against the very definition of racism but whatever...wait a minute though, Kanye West is more privileged than like 99% of white people, so that means we can wear this costume to our hearts content, right? Money is a far more powerful system of privilege than skin colour, pretty much always has been since money was a thing. People like to ignore the fact that black people owned slaves way back in the day too and they were just as cruel to them. Anyway what do you think about this nonsense, will people ever lighten up and learn to recognize the intention of a person before readying the lynch mobs? |

Steve has anyone ever told you that you are a racist f***ing idiot, and the way that you try to address the topics you clearly have no real understanding of with the confidence you do only highlights how lost a cause you are in both regards? |

Nothing, especially because Nick Fury was originally white. |
Piccolo: Just how many people have you sacrificed?! Cell: Sacrifice? Hmph, rubbish! On the contrary, it is an honor to become a fraction of my power. | |

Steve if you took a second to consider that black face was used just like the N word to mock black people then you might understand why it is considered a racist gesture. On its own, painting your face black and pretending to be a certain celebrity would not be racist. However when you add the historical context then it definitely becomes racist. That's the point you seem to be missing. Perhaps if for centuries we never enslaved and belittled people of colour then it would be fine? But since we did then it isn't. And one final thing I've noticed about you that I think I should bring up here. You seem to have this thing where you need to argue against the grain, dislike something because everyone else likes it or the opposite. It's like following popular opinion gives you a rash or something. Edited by Pelador, Nov 16 2015, 11:20 PM.

Obama is part white and actually almost light skin. A bit of make up instead of a darken face (most times darker than Obama) and you can avoid "black face". Nick Fury

All things Grosse says are true. But yeah... I don't put one Whiteface when I dress as Batman for halloween. I put on a Mask. Like seriously. The makeup within of itself is a connotation. Racist or not, it's just plain deliberate ignorance to try and pull that off. If it was a Kanye mask, that's different. You're not mocking a whole group of people, you're mocking one particular idiot. He probably isn't malicious, kinda like that dumb teacher a few years ago that use n***a on a black student. Just really stupid, but still. |
