Is there a difference between single volumes and 3-in-1 volumes?

It truly was a Shawshank redemption

I have a full single volume set of the DBZ manga and want to get started on DB (I've been meaning to do it for a while). It'd be more cost-effective to get the 3-in-1 volumes (although not by too much), although I think I'd prefer a single volume set. To help with the decision, can anyone who has knowledge of both versions tell me if there's any difference between the insides of the books? Or is it literally just like taking the pages from 3 volumes, merging them together and whacking on a new cover?

The 3-in-1s are apparently lower quality paper, and there is more censorship. At least from what I remember.

Ah, I'll probably go for the single volumes then.

I have the first 3 volumes of the 3-in-1 versions and I can agree on the lower quality compared to my single volumes. I got a really great deal on the single volume set through ebay, so you should definitely do some hunting on there. I'm positive that you'll find a deal!

The 3-in-1 volumes actually have LESS censorship than most of Viz's other releases. They haven't gotten to the late Cell and Boo arcs where guns were getting removed left and right yet, but most of the Bulma-centric nudity in the earlier volumes has been restored, and things like that. I'm pretty sure Mr. Popo's lips are still edited though.

The cheap paper doesn't look as bad as you'd think, and their small size and low price actually make them a pretty good option if you want to just collect the whole series for the sake of actually reading it. My only standout complaint about them is that they inappropriately use the Kanzenban covers...

As someone who hasn't read Dragon Ball (I've only read and seen Z), which version would give the best experience?

Mitas, I read the Dragon Ball manga for the first time early on this year. I chose to go with the individual volumes because I found a deal too good to pass up. It was a great experience to see it all unfold as I never got to finish the anime. The only reason I have a couple 3-in-1 volumes is because I ran across a ridiculous deal and it would have been stupid not to purchase.

I'm waiting to see someone's response as to which version is the best read as well out of curiosity!
