Kaio-Ken First Appearance: Chapter 226 Category: ki manipulation People: Son Goku Special Characteristics: A technique that instantly amplifies the ki inside one’s body, multiplying all that person’s abilities, including power, speed, defense, etc. Since it makes one capable of utilizing battle power many times their own ability, it is extraordinarily effective during battles with formidable opponents. However, because it is impossible to multiply excessively far beyond one’s abilities, experimenting with an unreasonably high Kaio-Ken might destroy one’s own body. When the user’s battle power is 8,000, their limit is x2, and when they are at 3 million the limit is x10. However, since real battles are harsh, Goku often had to use Kaio-Ken above those limits. The Kaio-Ken’s designer is the North Kaio, but Goku was the first person to be able to master it. (Daizenshuu 2, p.212/ Daizenshuu 4, p.113) Of course, that's just the Daizenshuu. Goku might be a self-proclaimed "genius" in regards to fighting, but his standing when it comes to the other most important trait when handling the Kaioken, Ki control, is arguable. This still doesn't explain why characters like Tien would be incapable of mastering it when they dedicate their lives to training their body. Edited by Thiln, Oct 16 2015, 06:37 AM.

On what basis is this true? Pre Kai-training Goku had no notable ki control advantage over everyone else after their training with Kami yet he was able to master it despite King Kai not being able to. Hell as it was stated earlier, Krillin was capable of controlling a spirit bomb without prior knowledge to it's existence mere minutes earlier. |

Tien and Yamcha most likely knew it. Context; Goku getting his *** beat by frieza Tien: Arent you forgetting about the kiaoken technique? Yamcha: Huh!? Tien: at his level of training goku should be able to go 10 times kiaoken! Yamcha: OH YEAH! How else can they know goku, at the level he was at would be able to go 10xkiaoken? unless ofcourse they mastered it themselves. Reasons why they didnt use it? 1/ Future villians all at ssj level or higher (except for 2/ Akira might have just forgot Edited by Nanho, Oct 18 2015, 03:05 AM.

That must've been such an insignificant development that it was never brought up once by anybody involved with the series, whether it be in interviews or supplementary material or even as a joke. |

I guess the concept of ssj made kiaoken obsolete...like any lame prototype

It still would've been worth mentioning at some point by someone over the course of 20+ years, I'd say. |

So if a character had a power level of 10 million his limit would be x20? And if it were higher like 25 million would it be x30? |

Maybe Goku's Saiyan biological makeup allowed him to use the ability, and humans are incapable of performing it? |

Piccolo would disagree with it being obsolete, by the time the Cell Games rolled around, a Kaio-ken x10 would've let him take on Super Perfect Cell and would've greatly helped his combative viability well into the Buu Saga. |
