What exactly is One Piece like and how does it compare with series such as Naruto, Dragon Ball, HunterxHunter etc. In terms for how characters are handled, how battles and powers are handled, and overall story and art style (I know a bit and have seen some of it once but I'd prefer to see what the more experienced viewers of this assume think)? It's the best selling manga of all times, this should tell you something. The characters actually does have really good development. The scaling is quite good and accurate. The story, holy s*it is it way better than Bleach and Naruto. It's battles aren't it's main strength, but they are cool nonetheless. Overall, the only comparable manga is HunterxHunter(maybe even better) but it's now HiatusXHiatus. It's definitely worth a watch. The first arcs may be boring, but it's the arlong park where it definitely picks up.if not it's the alabasta arc. What comes after The Foxy arc, is just pure Gold. |

I have a harsh opinion of one piece so I'm not going to say much. Try it though. You may like it you never know If you like wacky stuff than give it a go Despite my harsh opinion of the series overall, luffy and zoro were entertaining. Ussop though...this guy alone literally made me sick to my stomach. From design to voice... |

I'm not trying to be elitist when I say this or anything... If I haven't made it anymore obvious, I consider myself to have good taste in Manga, a lot better than most other posters here. Unlike many people here who mostly read Shonen, I've already ventured into Seinen territory. I rarely read any Shonen unless it's good or at least decent. I do have a lot of Shonen on plan to read, but they're very low on the priority scale, and I'll only drop most of them later on. With all that said, One Piece not only presents serious competition as the greatest Shonen... I also consider it superior to plenty of Seinen, there are few that can even come close. One Piece doesn't really have any low or crippling points in the series... Even some good Battle Seinen like Vagabond or Vinland Saga have horrible Arcs that revolve around Farming. Some nitpick the hell out of Part II One Piece though, but I finished Dressrosa in bulk and it really made up for Fishman Island and Punk Hazard, which were just setups. One Piece is also extremely carefully planned out especially for its length, and has fantastic world building. It goes into the history of the Islands the Straw Hats venture to in great detail. The thing is, most people here will also tell you Hunter X Hunter or Fullmetal Alchemist is the best Shonen. A lot of people here are Hunter or FMA fans, I've noticed, so their voices are heard louder... And they also stick to their comfort zone when it comes to Anime (Shonen Manga). I believe FMA is overrated. It's good, but people literally sometimes think rainbows shine out of FMA's a***. It has consistent quality throughout its run, but there are some minor plot holes near the end. Father was also a dumb a***, and he was the main villain. The ending and even the Final Arc in general is somewhat disapppointing. There are also some childish themes here and there like friendship (It's present in One Piece too, but it's more emphasized in FMA as well as more out of place)... I mean Greed literally died saying "All I wanted was a friend!", it can't get anymore straightforward than that. The tone in the first few volumes is also a bit too lighthearted and even boring... While there was still a sense of mystery, it took some time for it to have a more serious tone. However, I believe Hunter to be even more overrated than FMA. I can name a handful of Shonen better than Hunter, such as One Piece, Toriko, Slam Dunk, FMA, Jojo, probably even Magi. Hunter may be deep and psychological to an extent, but it is also generic. Some of the asspulls from YYH (which is written by the same author, and is even worse and even more overrated) are carried out into Hunter... If you look at early Hunter, you'll see flaws like the Nen System being nonexistent during the Hunter Exams (how else would Hisoka not notice Gon). Zoldyck Family and Greed Island are both awful Arcs... Some of the worse Arcs in Shonen. In general, I don't really like Hunter fans either. They are usually more pretentious than One Piece fans, and refuse to acknowledge some of the obvious flaws I mentioned about the series earlier. Now, do I believe One Piece is overrated, too? Yes, I do. But less than Hunter and FMA. That is also due to it being the best selling Manga in the World, as well as the fanbase in Japan and the fanboys who call Oda God. There are also stupid philistines here and there that are really biased against it for whatever reason, whether they've read the series or not, and it's usually about how much the art sucks or that it looks stupid. Other than that, I've noticed One Piece fans are for the most part intelligent. If you compare them to Naruto and Bleach fans, they care less about the fights and power inflation (although Bleach has no power chains), and silly pairings, and more about the direction the story heads and the world building and themes. In conclusion, I think you should listen to what I have to say about One Piece more than other members here. I will say East Blue will probably be hard to get through... It is for most people. Once you get to Alabasta, you'll see exactly why this Manga gets its praise. During CP9, you'll likely fall in love with it. And by the Whitebeard War, you'll be all aboard the hype train. Unrelated to the thread, but I'd strongly disagree here. While his final plan may have backfired, to have so many of his plans succeed over centuries is extremely impressive. He single-handedly infiltrated a country and became its ruler while remaining underground. |

His plan was more luck based than you may realize. He also didn't know who Ed and Al were, yet he needed them as sacrifices. He didn't even use any of his new abilities in the final fight. |

It was luck based in the sense that he relied on Hohenheim to release him. After that everything was done by him. When did he forget about Ed and Al, I don't recall that for some reason. And yeah, I agree that he was brutal in the final fight. He should have used his nuclear fusion abilities. |

Its shounen. What d'ya expect' I personally find OP to be overrated as f*** I find the art hideous with even horrible character designs. Luffy'll give Mr.Popo a run for his money. Manga's drawing can be wacky & the stereotypical cliches (as in Naruto, Bleach & early parts of HXH) are quite annoyin That being said, I'm personally a fan of Tite Kubo's (Bleach mangaka) sharp artstyle, even if the anime itself was garbage Wonder why I should even bother talkin abt Nakamaboy alias Naruto FMAB was average. Could've been superior to HXH(2011), but the director simply lacked the experience to handle a Biggie like FMAB HXH is a gem. MadHouse's presentation was so compelling with a ton of likable characters (as in DB) which I dare say almost no other anime could ever take pride. I started with serious troll-mode activated whenever HXH tries to fall into pitfall that most shounen did, but it carefully sets itself apart, which actually was to my liking Among all these, I'd say OP is about FMAB. Average show at best. |
