Favourite Filler?

What's your favourite filler?

For me it's probably the quest for the Super-God Water in the Piccolo-Daimao Saga. It had a real adventure feel to it. I also liked when those Fake Yamcha & Fake Master Roshi & Fake Bulma & so-on appeared. Also when Master-Roshi tells Goku to let go-off Yajirobe, but he doesn't do it. That was a kewl moment.

That Fake Master-Roshi was Evil, l0l.

Also when Goku finally got the water. That was kewl, too.

Also I liked Gohan's birthday celebration. That was kewl.

When Yamcha beats Olibu like he s nothing, because it makes no sense. ;) But for real, I would say when Goku and Piccolo drive cars, because the contrast between them shows in a clever way.

As a guy who made the same thread on Kanzenshuu, I'll give you my favorite from that:

"Trouble on Arlia" a fairly early episode in the original Z anime's run but a pretty cool one nonetheless. I mostly like it for how much of a subversion it is to a pretty standard formula. We've seen it all before, evil space tyrant forces his people into horrible slavery, some outsider shows up, becomes space Jesus and defeats the emperor, saving the alien world like a proper hero! Well, not this time.

What I like is that Vegeta & Nappa go there both to just f*ck about for a bit and see if the planets worth something. They don't care about the Arlian's plight or the poor state of the planet on any morally righteous level, they're just a smidge annoyed they can't sell it for any money. It serves as a good way of showing just what kind of threat the Z fighters are dealing with, especially with the ending.

They do the expected story thing: confront of the tyrant, beat up his men and defeat him once and for all. The one Arlian who wasn't hostile to them proclaims them heroes and legends and that they'll always be welcome to Arlia. What do Nappa and Vegeta think about this whole development? They blow Arlia the f*ck up of course! It does a great job of showing their overwhelming power, lack of any morality and gives you just a tantalizing little nugget of what the upcoming battle will be like.

Even though it didn't make sense, I liked the extended Cell Junior fight; it was good to see everyone in action again. I also liked that everyone intervened against Cell in the anime.

The Garlic Jr. arc was really nice too. The animation generally stunk, but the fighting was good and the lack of Goku was refreshing.

I kind of enjoyed the filler with Goku and Chichi post-23rd trying to find the Bansho Fan.

Filler arc or filler episode(s)? My favorite filler episode is the driving one. It's just the best. As for my favorite filler arc, probably the Otherworld arc.

Goku wasn't around for the majority of the Saiyan and Freeza arcs...

I think he meant Goku being the central focus of the story, too. Could be wrong though.

Also I liked the training for the 23rd Tenkaichi-Budokai with Kami & Mr. Popo, even if it was a bit contradictory. Like when Goku was sent back in time when Master-Roshi and Tsuru-Sennin were young, and Master Mutaito was still alive.

Also the episode when Goku was fishing with that one person (old person I think). Especially the ending of that episode, "That was the day in the 3 years training he laughed the most." or something like that with the music playing. That was kewl & good.

The 5 episodes right after the Uranai Baba Saga and before the Tenshinhan Saga. I love those episodes.

I also like the filler episodes of Goku's training on Kami's Lookout.

Those arcs were almost entirely about Goku, whether he appeared on panel or not. Besides, barely anything important happened before he showed up. Garlic Jr. managed to avoid using the formula that both those arcs followed.

I don't see how you can claim that Goku was barely around. You could have pretty much cut out all the non-Goku parts (that's basically what that Dragon Ball SD did) and the story would still make sense. I mean, what did the Z-fighters actually accomplish against Nappa? What did Vegeta accomplish by fighting Zarbon, Dodoria, and the Ginyus? What was accomplished by fighting Freeza's suppression forms?

And of course every arc in DB was Goku-centric.

This scene. I feel like it was one of the best character development scenes in the franchise. In the manga he just turns Super Saiyan off panel, which seems really anti-climatic. But in the anime Gohan becomes one due to his hatred of how he’s always the one who has needed to be saved. He’s always putting people at risk to come save him, while he can rarely do anything himself (outside of rage boosts). He’s watched countless people die right in front of him that he couldn’t help.

You probably should have specified that you meant a story not about Goku, instead of saying the lack of Goku.

That should be implicit, and I mean it literally too. Having an arc that's completely Goku-less and self-contained is basically the antithesis of anything not related to Cell.
