Which do you prefer in terms of naming?

I for one think they're mostly about equal, with the exception of Slifer/Osiris. Slifer is a far better name, because you can just get way with calling that a made-up god. On the other hand, using Osiris just sounds stupid, it's like using Zeus for a water god.

I honestly prefer the American names, much easier to retain.

But aren't most of them the same ?

I prefer the English dub names. They're the first I was introduced to, so I associate with them more, and they sound better to me. This goes for the monsters as well for the most part ("God of the Obelisk" doesn't sound nearly as monstrous as "Obelisk the Tormentor", for instance).

I thought the thing with Osiris was that that two-mouthed red dragon thingy was supposed to be Osiris' dragon or something, not Osiris himself. Although I did think to myself it was kinda weird how they named that monster Osiris at first, but it didn't bother me that much, because the actual Osiris is pretty bland.

I'm having a hard time finding the similarities...

Still, I'd rather have Osiris over Slifer because at least there's some relation with the ancient Egypt thing and it makes him sound more godly. Slifer isn't a bad name, but it doesn't sound like anything.

With the other names, it doesn't really bother me. I don't get why they changed Malik to Marik, though. Malik is an actual name given to a king-like title. Makes him feel royal. Although I guess people who don't know that wouldn't give a damn about it.
And changing Jonouchi to Joey is... weird. I'm obviously used to hearing Jonouchi and Joey sounds like the name I'd give to a pet monkey.

Piccolo: Just how many people have you sacrificed?!

Cell: Sacrifice? Hmph, rubbish! On the contrary, it is an honor to become a fraction of my power.

They could have just named him after the Egyptian god of the sky, Nut. Granted, the name sounds silly, but it's less contradictory. Hell, even Horus would be more appropriate than that.

Oh, and funny thing, Slifer is actually the name of the executive producer of the English dub. Hence why the Abridged series has it as "Slifer the Executive Producer". I guess that 4Kids realized that the name had nothing to do with Osiris and just went with the executive producer's name for some reason.

Well there is a legitimate argument for it. If it was meant to be Malik, it'd be "Mariku". But the show is just "Marik", therefore, you can take it as Marik.

The English dub does lampshade that to its credit by having Kaiba's favorite taunt be that Joey is a dueling money

Okay, the thing with Slifer is both pretty cool and pretty stupid. It's cool because that producer must feel honored, but it's ridiculous because there's no point on giving it that name.

I guess the thing with Malik is pointless and meaningless. It's like Godzilla and Gojira, you'll use whichever appeals to you more.

I was going to follow my last comment of "Joey sounding like a monkey name" with "I guess Kaiba would agree to that lol", but I thought it was too obvious. In the japanese sub I'm watching Kaiba's constantly referring to him as a "loser dog"(at one point he even dresses as one) or "deadbeat", which got old pretty quickly, but I guess the writers really wanted to establish that Kaiba is one cocky bastard.
