The first Budokai is often credited as this revelation for DBZ games due to a large number of low-quality DBZ games before it, as it was more than just a cheap cash-in. It was a good DBZ game for the time and an alright fighter. But what if it failed be it critically and/or commercially? Would Atari/Namco eventually give up when the DBZ craze in North America dies out (1999-2003), would it just give Dimps more incentive to turn it up a notch for the sequel, or would another game take it's place? |

Budokai 2 would either be the complete bomb or they would come up with a whole different, new game that would have made up for Budokai's failure. |

If it'd failed I think a lot of DBZ fans would be bummed that we can't control the powerful warriors the series presented to us. |

What do you mean 'If it failed' ? Budokai was already failed in terms of game mechanics and critics. At the best it was considered a mediocre game. It survived mainly due to dbz fans. In other words,it managed to pass financially due to large dbz fan base in Japan and later in US.

The game definitely didn't age too gracefully (though it was never a great game to begin with) but for most it was easily the best we got at the time. It captured the Dragon Ball feel and was considered okay by critics, much better received than previous games. It also sold well. That's why it was a big deal when it csme out plus it's sequels (especially Budokai 3) improves the formula. Edited by DBZAOTA482, Oct 2 2015, 08:07 PM.
