New Labour party leader Jeremy Corbyn thinks it's a sensible idea to nationalise the railways. Is this a good idea or not? I don't think so. First of all it is not the responsibility of government to provide railways. With the exception of tube trains, I consider them a luxury. They are not something we cannot do without. Secondly I'm not confident in the government's ability to manage them properly or keep them profitable. I can imagine them appointing grossly unqualified ministers to look after them and making a real mess of it all. Thirdly, does the government even need to take them over again? The problem is that dozens of different aspects of the railways are owned by dozens of different companies. This means that one hand doesn't know what the other is doing half the time. You also get a situation where plenty of serviceable carriages are left in a yard somewhere as the company who owns the trains can't afford to take them off the company who owns the carriages and neither of them want to pay fees to the company who owns the lines if they can help it. It's a massive cluster f***. What needs to happen is for a single company to own the lines and then companies like Virgin and others to buy all the carriages and trains between them. Streamline it all. Edited by Pelador, Sep 21 2015, 02:53 AM.

Railways in the Netherlands are nationalised. Now i don't know anything about the details, completely ignorant on trains but zim just going to point out that the railway system over here is bad. Trains never in time, trains not traveling at the slightest inconvenience, constant problems with checking in and out. |

I come from a very railway heavy town, which our entire set up was based around the production of trains, and maintenance of the railway system as a whole. When the Trains went private many years ago, that all basically went out the window which set us back a big deal. On the whole though, i half agree that im not sure they would look after the set up, but then again would they bring people in to run them? essentially just keeping them as they are? |

The railways in the UK used to be nationalised, then they were sold off, which was a terrible mistake. The railways aren't making money, the private companies are cutting corners and the industry is heavily subsidised by the government already, many of the small lines are in desperate need of repair and upgrades. To put it back into government control would help to provide a better/more unified service and it also means the government can put money where it's needed without relying on private companies, who are all competing with each other. |

They were sold off why? I assume because they cost too much to keep running. Labour does not have a good history with managing finances. I would bet they would get it wrong with the railways again. |

The Tories don't have a good record with money, they were sold for quick cash, no long term plan, same with utilities and the Royal Mail. The Tories are good at under selling to their friends, who make a tidy profit later. Running a county is expensive, but don't spew popular arguments about how Labour are bad with money, borrowing and spending continues to go up, what effects do cuts have if spending is going upwards? In 2010, Government borrowing was at its highest levels for several years and is still higher than at any point under Labour, so ditch party political arguments because they are junk. |

Privatization usually always turn out bad in the long run. I think it's a good idea for the government to nationalize the rail system. |
