Crazy Awesome Legend

The two great empires clash, who comes out on top? The Mongolians under Genghis Khan fought on horseback using powerful composite bows to pick apart their opponents. When their opponents weakened they charged them with lances and scimitars. The Romans on the other hand mostly fought on foot. They carried a large wooden shield known as a scutum and a powerful gladius sword. When engaged in hand to hand combat, they would lock their shields together and stand in tight rows against their opponents, stabbing and slashing whist archers fired from behind the forward ranks. Roman cavalry was heavily armoured and carried a variety of weapons such as bows, lances, javelins and swords. I think nine times out of ten the Mongolians win. Their horses might not have been as fast but they were far more numerous. They quickly surround the Roman legions and break them down with relentless arrows. The Roman footsoldiers with their heavy shields and equipment cannot cope with the manoeuvrable Mongolians. |

I agree with what you wrote... in open fields the Mongols have the mobility with the horses and a lethal weapon the composite bow. Combine that with the leadership of a ruthless animal, they win majority of the outcomes. But I think if the fight takes place in a narrow field, the Romans legions has the advantage, they have the curve shield as protection, and unlike the Greeks who needed the other to work as a unit, the Romans tactics were simple, ram your shields and stab |
