Presentation of Dragon Ball Zenkai Battle Royale; The game we need on consoles

Hi,

I didn’t see any topic going very deep on this game so I allow myself to do it.

1- What is this game

First of all, you have to know that this arcade game is developed and edited by Namco Bandai, was released on 2011 and is regularly updated with new characters. Each new update is announced with a trailer which shows new characters abilities and trailer are very close that what we can see as communication on console video games.
To dive deeper into the presentation, DBZBR is a 3D fight game on Dragon Ball universe in which 4 characters are fighting simultaneously.

Actually 3 way to play:
A scenario which allow us to do emblematic fight of DBZ
A team battle in which we fight on-line 2v2 players from all Japan
A Battle Royale in which we fight 1v1v1v1

Fight are taking place into open arenas and partially destroyable/destructible and enough large to run and fly without feeling that you are pressed against the other players. Actually there are 8 stage well designed and circled by a yellow line to indicate fight area.

Character roster allow to choose between 40 character from sayan saga (Raditz/Teen Gohan/Yamcha/Tenchinhan), saga Freezer (Freezer/Zabon/Gyunyu), saga Cell, saga Buu and other character from OAV as Baddack, Broly, Janemba, Beerus or Golden Freezer etc… I think this is not definitive roster yet. (Sorry for character names employed I don’t know well how it's in english)

2- What are the real added value compared to other dbz games ?

In my opinion this game is a sort of Tenkaichi 3 (with less character for the moment) a bit less technical but extremely more strategic.

DBZBR strategy and teamplay is really ambitious. The fight system allow movements for 1v1 but also for 1v2, 2v1 or 1v3 ! Collateral damages are also managed so it brings a great part of strategy, for exemple you can grab an enemy and put him has a shield to protect yourself during few seconds ! Different way of play (2v2 or 1v1v1v1) creates hilarious moments but also strategic one because 2 last survivors are designed as winner. It’s not rare to see a situational turnaround during the Royal Rumble fights and have our ally of the last seconds becoming your opponent of now because he’ll be 3rd and he just has to hit you to be 2nd !!!

(at 1’40’’ we can see Buu and Goku doing a team combo on Trunk and the other opponent which is outside combo take this time to launch a Kamehameha on you, your mate and your victim. At 1’50’ we can see Buu and Goku staying on Trunks corpse to avoid his resurrection by Goku… and it is few strategy in front of all this game allow you to do)

At the fight level, find below my analysis :

the attack side:

1 button to hit, 1 button for kikoho, 1 guard button, 1 fly button, 1 target button, 2/3/4 special by character, a pursuit, a grab, a team combo starter, a starter to push away the opponent and allow to begin a pursuit and a front dash.
There are also variation for hit button if we move the orientation of the stick, effect will be different and allow to counter some dodges (right hit counter left dodge…)
1v1 combos are generally very simple: hit, hit, hit, hit, hit … until the enemy is on the ground. We can also chain with a pursuit (at the end of “hit,hit,hit,hit…”) and try to continue the combo. We can also add to a classical combo a super attack as variation.
For 2v1 combos, many solutions:

i- Either we hit the opponent in the same time of our ally, we access to a basic team combo (nevertheless be careful of the 4th character who will not stay and watch you)

ii- Either we place a starter of “comboteam” attack and it engage a bullet time period of 2/3 second during which if your ally do the same attack a cut-scene will open and both of you will hit your enemy in the same time

iii- Either we grab the opponent as a child, our ally charge him and it allow you to engage a small tennis party with opponent as ball

iiii- Either we throw the enemy on our ally who will combo him 1v1

On defense side:

1 guard button, 1 double defense, 1 ultimate defense, 1 back dash, 1 left dodge, 1 right dodge, some character have special dodge or teleport moves.
The guard button is classical and allow to avoid kikoho and guard against physical hits. Nevertheless, it will break gradually if we took to many hits and when it’s break, we have no defense during few seconds.
The double defense put the game in a bullet time period during few seconds and allow to counter opponent attacks if at least two character try to hit us. If it’s the case, it push away enemies and deal them few damages. If only one character try to hit us, double defense skill is canceled and we are without defense.
The ultimate defend is simple, it allow us to stop attacks of 1, 2 or 3 opponent and in every case (during a combo, during an ultimate, during a team combo…)

Another really important point to mention is the difference between each character.
Every character has his own capacity and is useful !

For exemple Janemba can teleport near enemy or return back his kikoho to his face with his "dimensional magic", C-16 can activate his bomb and deal extreme damage to opponent when it explode. C-20 can steal Ki opponent or convert his Ki on Life, Krilin can break guard with his Kienzan, can blind us with sun bite or make appear a double of himself. Bardock has the capacity to be more powerful if his life decrease until unlocking the availibility of being ssj....

3- Conclusion

I cannot hide to you that I was hypnotized by this game several hours to confirm that is a real bomb but not available to us.. That is why i have decided to create a petition to convince Bandai Namco to adapt this game on consoles.
