Maybe not all of you have played it but I have and out of all the many board games I have played, Risk is by far the greatest. You take control of an army by moving little coloured soldiers, horses and cannons around a map of the world. Your aim is either to conquer the whole world or complete an objective given to you at the start of the game. The problem is you have to do this against up to five other people. So why do I think it is the greatest? Unlike other contenders such as Monopoly, Risk involves far more strategy. If you go for the wrong continent with too few numbers of soldiers then you are going to be in trouble. Unless of course you get amazing dice rolls. But even then without numbers you will not hold your newly conquered territories for long. Especially if you are trying to get Asia. The rules might not be as easy to learn as Monopoly or Scrabble but they are still fairly straightforward. I won't go into them here because it takes a booklet to explain them all. But despite this they are simple. Certainly a lot more so than Dungeons and Dragons which I also very much like. It takes about the same amount of time to set up as Monopoly. In that game you need to get everyone's money dealt out properly which of course takes some time depending on player numbers. With Risk, players are dealt playing cards which tell them which territories they begin with and therefore how many soldiers they can have. The most time consuming aspect is placing the units on the board. Length of the game depends on luck of the dice and the skill and numbers of the players. It is generally shorter than Monopoly and of course way faster than Dungeons and Dragons. |
