1 in 200 men direct descendants of Genghis Khan

In 2003 a groundbreaking historical genetics paper reported results which indicated that a substantial proportion of men in the world are direct line descendants of Genghis Khan. By direct line, I mean that they carry Y chromosomes which seem to have come down from an individual who lived approximately 1,000 years ago. As Y chromosomes are only passed from father to son, that would mean that the Y is a record of one’s patrilineage. Genghis Khan died ~750 years ago, so assuming 25 years per generation, you get about 30 men between the present and that period. In more quantitative terms, ~10% of the men who reside within the borders of the Mongol Empire as it was at the death of Genghis Khan may carry his Y chromosome, and so ~0.5% of men in the world, about 16 million individuals alive today, do so. Since 2003 there have been other cases of “super-Y” lineages. For example the Manchu lineage and the Uí Néill lineage. The existence of these Y chromosomal lineages, which have burst upon the genetic landscape like explosive stars sweeping aside all other variation before them, indicates a periodic it “winner-take-all” dynamic in human genetics more reminiscent of hyper-polygynous mammals such as elephant seals. As we do not exhibit the sexual dimorphism which is the norm in such organisms, it goes to show the plasticity of outcome due to the flexibility of human cultural forms.

Censuses from the Middle Ages show that the population of China plummeted by tens of millions during the Khan’s lifetime, and scholars estimate that he may have killed a full three-fourths of modern-day Iran’s population during his war with the Khwarezmid Empire. All told, the Mongols’ attacks may have reduced the entire world population by as much as 11 percent.

I know the first thing people would say the Mongolians lost the Battle of Ain Jalut. Well, if you studied history, the Great Khan Mongke died which means Hulagu had to return back to Mongolia along with majority of the army. After the Mongolians came back they defeated the Turkish empire who at that time was the strongest Muslim empire. You may think I'm trying to boost Genghis Khan, but I'm not, I'm just pointing out that there might be some asian family with who might be descendants.

After reading that, what is your overall opinion on Genghis Khan and the Mongolian empire? Do you what he did to those women is acceptable?

There is a general rule of thumb whe it comes to civilisations: all civilisations identified as empires most often were forged, maintained and often both through bloodshed and mass slavery and other acts which we would now call crimes against humanity. But the Mongolians are just as much a product of their environment as they were of Genghis' leadership. The steppes are a brutal place to live compared to the river valleys most other civilisations began in. It is possible (if unlikely) that the historical record of Mongolians would have changed if their native land was more hospitable. At least, that is my opinion. When you have little in valuable resources, you will often find other places to get them and simply taking by force can be easy when you build a reputation of destruction. Blackbeard is proof of that just as much as Genghis Khan himself.

I understand alot of their actions were results from their time period, most empires had emperors behaving badly. I still don't think its no excuse though, this guy forced alot of women to have sex, ALOT enough for today for people to research they might be related to him through blood.
