A pretty simple question.

Who, in your opinion, is the best president that the United States has ever had and why?

Honestly, probably Franklin D. Roosevelt. Call it cliche if you wish but there's a reason he's constantly referred to as one of the greatest Presidents and men of his generation. When we were getting our economic butts handed to us during the Great Depression, his New Deal, directly or indirectly helped to pave way back to economic success. He helped move America's way along World War II. This isn't even getting into the absolute stress of having polio and forcing to keep it as secret as possible. Roosevelt got all this crap thrown at him be it physically, mentally, economically, socially and through his efforts and those with him, managed to turn it around. The fact that he was able to get 3 terms really shows the impact he had on the American people shows how well he did things.

Not that I'm all that knowledgeable on my own Presidents but the only person I can think of who has has to go through as much as him and managed to move America through was Abraham Lincoln who deserves at least a good special mention here as well. Where Roosevelt had to go through extreme issues of economic depression and World War II, Lincoln had to deal with the issues of slavery and his own country being torn apart and through his efforts and the efforts of those around him, managed to again bring us back together. There are some notifications that Lincoln wasn't as benign on abolishing slavery as thought but even if that was the case, its clear that the rights of human life ruled over his own personal objection.

There are a lot of great Presidents (and probably even more bad ones to be honest) who did some amazing things. The things Theodore Roosevelt did were astounding to say the least. But I think maybe because of popular depiction of what we know, it feels like people mentioned above did not only great things but managed to push through the terrifying ordeals that were placed upon them.

Teddy Roosevelt or Bill Clinton for me.

Roosevelt was a man ahead of his time when it came to conservation work. Plus he regulated corporate monopolies and set up the National Reclamation Act of 1902, which established irrigation projects in the west. Legislation related to business regulation enacted during Roosevelt’s presidency includes the Elkins Act of 1903, the Hepburn Act of 1906, and the Federal Employers' Liability Act for Labor. He also worked on consumer protections, including the Federal Meat Inspection Act of 1906 and the Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906.

As for Clinton:

Longest economic expansion in American history

More than 22 million new jobs

Highest homeownership in American history

Lowest unemployment in 30 years

Raised education standards

Increased school choice and doubled education and training investment

Largest expansion of college opportunity since the GI Bill

Connected 95 percent of schools to the Internet.

Lowest crime rate in 26 years

100,000 more police on the streets

Enacted most sweeping gun safety legislation in a generation

Family and Medical Leave Act for 20 million Americans

Smallest welfare rolls in 32 years

Higher incomes at all levels

Lowest poverty rate in 20 years

Lowest teen birth rate in 60 years

Lowest infant mortality rate in American history

Deactivated more than 1,700 nuclear warheads from the former Soviet Union

Paid off $360 billion of the national debt

Converted the largest budget deficit in American history to the largest surplus

Lowest government spending in three decades

Lowest federal income tax burden in 35 years

George Dubya.
It would be appreciated if you added more to the discussion than a simple name.
This is Deep Discussion, and the protocol here is to have detailed conversations. Why do you think he's the greatest president of all time?

On topic, Lyndon B. Johnson wasn't a bad president either, but Clinton was probably one of our best. The Monica Lewinsky scandal was blown way out of proportion considering that JFK openly moonlighted with Marylin Monroe while he was married to Jackie, and no one batted an eye.

Impeachment for lying about a blow job? Give me a break.

Other presidents did far worse and weren't ever impeached.

I like how Groose likes Pelador's post, but he himself picks 'George Dubya' based on his voice.

I'd say that's a bad thing. It made him more centrist because he wanted to look like this rational guy, he didn't want to be the first black president who went mad with changes. I would rather have a strong democrat like Sanders ruling the US
