| Visually, Super Looks "Off"; What's wrong with the animation? | |

So I recently decided to take up watching Dragon Ball Super despite my doubts (can't knock it if you don't try it!) Found some time to get around to watching the 1st few episodes. One thing that stood out though, to me anyway, is the poor animation. The details are good I suppose, but the animation itself doesn't seem as good as it was years ago. What changed? |

Personally, I don't think its as bad a people claim. My guess is that the combination of a weekly schedule, having to have 50+ broadcast episodes in a year( the average number for a long-running anime), and the fact that they are not hand-drawing the animation is the most likely reason why the show's animation may not be as good as it was on DBZ or Dragonball. In general, I think Super is on par with other anime like Inuyasha, Naruto, or other popular anime that are long runners. Anime in general has shifted from high-quality that may be hard to reproduce week to week to more of a decent looking quantity approach. You really don't get high-quality animation in anime(or even western animation) unless its a major movie. The animation in general is pretty decent, and I think its a pretty good looking show outside of EP 5 Is it on par with the last two movies? No, and I think that's some of the problem. BOG and ROF were very well-animated movies that had some insane effects in them. People are likely comparing that animation to something done on a TV budget and schedule. Just my opinion on the matter. Edited by caryslan, Aug 25 2015, 01:23 AM.

It's ok. I don't think anyone was expecting great animation coming from another Dragon Ball series. |
Piccolo: Just how many people have you sacrificed?! Cell: Sacrifice? Hmph, rubbish! On the contrary, it is an honor to become a fraction of my power. | |

I don't know, Episode 5 aside, nothing bad has really stood out at me about Super regarding animation. Sure its not amazing but its still good enough. |

The problem is the fact that animation itself has barely any fluidity or even frames of animation to begin with and it really shows how lazy Toei Animation has become. At the very least, in the past Toei Animation would've focused their best animators on things like huge actions scenes and stuff and yet in Super, our first big action scene was Episode 5 which honestly may go down in DB infamy as one of the worst pieces of animation of the mid 2010s and maybe even one of the worst DB animations of all time. It wasn't just poor in the quality of looks, it was poor in the quality of animation and fluidity as well. It's not like Toei Animation isn't capable of good quality animation. Episode of Bardock...stupid concept beyond...looks both nice with graphics that fit in the current generation and has some sweet animation to it as well. When Bardock is beating the crap out of Chill, you can see the animation, frames and movement of the body and scenery that comes together to bring something great. It looks really nice. In fact, I'd rather them have visuals that are...rather plain in appearance but make them up with beautiful fluidity in the animation. It's something you see in something like "Naruto vs Pain" where the appearance isn't all that great and the models might be off, but its made up with some great frames of animation and fluidity. Of course you'd hope that they'd put as much effort into the appearance as they would the animation. This the reason people love Ufotable. It doesn't just look good it's moves good, it feels good, its' appearance is both visually stunning and its animation fluid and memorable. As far as Super has become, Toei Animation appears to put almost the most basic amount of effort into the series right now. Even their best episode right now in Super is very plain and definitely hasn't come up to the same animation quality as those supervised by Tadayoshi Yamamuro and Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru. And the less we talk about episode 5 the better I suppose. At the very least, Toei Animation in regards to DBZ would at least have focused their better animation on the action scenes and something like Episode 5 which was are first real big fight scene probably would've gotten someone like Masaki Satō to work on it. But unfortunately it shows and Super's quality of animation has yet to come up to par to some of the episodes of DBZ by these other animators. |

Well You have to consider the fact that animators in japan are treated like s*it. However I don't have any problems with the animation.Except episode 5, That was disgustingly hilarious. |

For Dragon Ball Z they seemed to have about 6 or so different animators. Do they have less people for that now maybe? |

If I'm not mistaken, these 6 animators have their studios. So they have more than 6. I'm sure they have a lot more now, but Quality =/= Quantity. Like I said, these animators are treated like slaves and don't get much pay. |

Well, I figured if they had more people to animate, they'd also have more time to finish before a given deadline since they'd likely work on multiple episodes at a time. But if they're still doing it that way then I don't know what it is. Is the pay less and the workload harsher than it was years ago or? |
