I just thought I'd open a discussion about this claim because I feel the manga makes it clear the two are very separate. I won't touch on Burter and USSj since we already know about them. Starting with something easy, speed and power are always separated when describing how incredible someone is. If power and speed were directly related, there'd be no need to add "speed" into all these quotes, it'd just fall under power. Spoiler: click to toggle Murasaki: “Wh... What... What speed... And what power!!” Tenshinhan: “Impo-impossible…! His strength and speed are unbelievable…! And he’s just an underling…He’s not even Piccolo…!” Goku: “I don’t believe this…He ain’t merely strong…His speed and power are both beyond comparison to my own…” Kame-sennin: “Th…that’s right! Even after getting hit with an attack that powerful, Goku hasn’t been left out of breath…! The most frightening thing about Goku now isn’t his power or speed…! It’s the outrageous toughness he’s acquired!” Goku: “That ain’t like you to make a mistake like that, Tenshinhan. It was an amazin’ strategy to become 4 people. But by splitting into 4 people, your attack, defense, speed, and everything got divided in 4 too.” Goku: “Yeah. It’s called Kaio-Ken! [ ] You control all the ki in your body…momentarily amplifying it. If you get it right, then your power, speed, destructive force, and defensive force all become many times greater…” Vegeta: “What happened just now? For an instant…his speed and power both rapidly increased!!” Goku: “s**…!! His power and speed… [ ] I can’t keep up, even with the Kaio-Ken x2. [ ] I don’t care if my body breaks or I die! I’ve gotta up the Kaio-Ken to x3!!” Goku: “That bastard’s got outrageous speed too…Well then, what am I gonna do?...” Cell: “Even I’m surprised at this magnificent speed…Obviously this is thanks to absorbing No.17…I wonder what my power’s like? [he blasts No.16] Hoh…Seems that’s gone up quite a bit too…” (Cell straight up says here that high speed =/= high power) Cell: “Power! Speed! Technique! Brains! Mental Strength! I will be perfect in every way! That’s what the computer told me!!” Characters imply that you can be faster even without a power advantage: Spoiler: click to toggle Tien says Goku has improved his strength, but not his speed. He doesn't state this as if it's unsual or anything. Tenshinhan: “Son, you are truly incredible. 3 years ago, your strength was all but perfect. I’m amazed that you’ve managed to go so far above even that. However, there’s one thing that you haven’t changed that much from 3 years ago. And that’s something especially important in battle…speed!” Recoome doesn't think Goku is strong despite Goku being faster than Burter. Recoom: “Y-you bastard…Looks like you’re confident in your speed, at least…Hehe…But you can’t win just be running away all the time…!” Goku actually IS weaker than Ginyu despite being faster. Ginyu: “He’s fast! Is his speed greater than mine?!” This line alone practically says it outright. It turned out to be untrue in this one instance, but Piccolo was confident that his speed is so much higher than his power-level would suggest, that he could outrun a guy who was stomping him in battle. Piccolo: “Damn him! You may be more powerful, but I’m faster! You couldn’t catch up to me even if you spent your entire lifetime!” Android 17's speed is good, yet his power apparently isn't all that. Piccolo: “Your speed is pretty good...But your punch lacks weight.” Like the Piccolo example, Gohan thinks he can outrun Boo despite being weaker. Gohan: “It’s alright! I’m confident in my speed!” Boo quickly catches up to them* Gohan: “…! Th-that can’t be…!” And then there's this quote during Goku vs Vegeta: Goku: “It figures...He’s still just joking around, yet he’s still surpassing me in speed and technique.” This was after Goku had used Kaioken x2, but before Vegeta had powered up to max. We don't know exactly how much Vegeta powered up, but Goku was at >16,000, so it's pretty likely Goku had more power here, and yet Vegeta was still winning because of his speed and skill, the lack of power here is pretty important to determining if more speed = more power. This happens later after Vegeta powers up: Goku: “s*…!! His power and speed… [ ] I can’t keep up, even with the Kaio-Ken x2. [ ] I don’t care if my body breaks or I die! I’ve gotta up the Kaio-Ken to x3!!” Only now does Goku admit inferiority with his power. So yeah, what do you guys think? Edited by Clearin**, Aug 17 2015, 01:49 AM.
