...how is this guy gonna be their mentor?
It's one thing for him to beat everyone up and scare them, but Beerus here is straight up evil.
Man, if they actually become his students... I have to say my respect with Goku will plummet immensely. I know he loves fighting more than anything and all but still. This guy is basically an intergalactic bully.
At least we have Vegeta the cook.
He could have a change of heart.

Piccolo was evil, yet he became Gohan's mentor.

Also, I'm sure it's Whis who will be their mentor.
No one really had a say in the matter, Piccolo changes over time and people saw that. However had Goku survived I really doubt that he'd just let him take Gohan... Then again with Super maybe he would have. That seems to be the direction they're taking Goku. And frankly I'll be honest, I want Champa at this point to humiliate Beerus, just a flat villain created from an actually intriguing character.
And admittedly yes, but still Whis just let's all this happen, he's not much better.
You know I did not expect the manga to be one I prefer in terms of "cannon" but there it is I suppose.

Piccolo went after them in his father's name, there was some reasoning to his actions. Beers just wants to hurt things for the lolz and because he's an entitled and pompous brat.

I get that Whis will be their mentor, but Whis condones Beers's actions without saying a single word. That is pretty much evil by allowance, since he could easily stop Beers but chooses not to.

He went after them for his father, which in turn did evil things for no sense.

Afterall Beerus is the god of destruction, he knows that everyone will try to please him and in turn he got spoiled.
Kind of like Buu, who destroyed planets for fun.

I can't even support him in the destruction of the planet back in Chapter 1 (Manga-wise). Would you say a group of people deserve to die if they fail to murder a tyrant? They tried to kill him for a good reason; Beerus brought it on himself.

At least in BoG/RF, his immaturity wasn't completely unbearable. He was childish, but he wasn't shown to be sadistic like he is in Super.

I give the manga a pass mostly because it felt to me like they were trying to say these guys are bad people, the anime on the other hand is very much trying to show how horrible this person is. To the point that I want him dead like all the other villains. Maybe that's the twist in Super, Goku kills Beerus. :D

I really liked this episode. Beerus was one loveable bad-ass bastard here. That "confrontation" between him and Boo was epic. This episode overall was far better than that party scene in the BoG movie; Vegeta Cook, that small talk between Yamcha and Beerus, Mr Satan getting dispatched by both Beerus and Boo, Beerus and Whis creeping on Vegeta, that scene with King Vegeta and Beerus...

I missed these episodes where those who work hard on them had fun. That must've been why there was almost zero effort put into Episode 5, because there was nothing to have fun with there.

Piccolo: Just how many people have you sacrificed?!

Cell: Sacrifice? Hmph, rubbish! On the contrary, it is an honor to become a fraction of my power.

I also find it strange how Good Boo is less nice than Fat Boo. I'm not sure if it's a weird translation, but Boo's justification for not sharing his food is "I'm the strongest, do you have any complaints?". Him hitting Hercule was also really douchey.

Oh yeah, aside from Beerus this episode was allot better, especially Vegeta as a chef, I think that actually overtakes the source material.

I guess that's true.

I hope the fifth episode hiccup knocked some sense into TOEI and like Clearin said, I hope this is the new standard for DBS!

He's a force of nature. It's his job to destroy, and if folks fail to appease, what reason does he have to forgo destruction?

Beerus's role has never been adequately explained. All we've got is "there must be creation and destruction", we never see any creation, nor are we given any suitable explanation for why these things have to be kept in balance. Besides, Beerus doesn't seem to actually destroy things. He blows up planets, but it would be far more logical if he could use magic to actually erase things from existence. The destruction he causes preserves mass; if you gave him that unique ability, we might be able to fill in the blanks ourselves, but instead he just blows up planets because he doesn't like their food. That's complete nonsense, especially given our lack of information about why he destroys things.
I love building PCs. If you have any questions about it feel free to ask. I can help you with almost any kind of PC you'd want to build.

If he's just a force of nature, then he wouldn't give the natives false hope and take advantage of them before destroying the planet.

It's not his destruction that's the problem, it's that he takes such sadistic glee in it and even when he's not destroying, he shows the exact same attitude(see him attacking King Vegeta for not getting him the pillow he wanted). He is also a massive hypocrite with his lines about being a nice god and getting offended at things he does himself. Beers is no better than Freeza, if anything, he's worse. At least Freeza is somewhat predictable, Beers is just completely crazy.

You're right, he shouldn't be giving folks a chance, but he does anyway. And why shouldn't he be sadistically gleeful when it comes to destruction, it's his freaking purpose in life.
