Goku: "Hang on Piccolo. Killing Buu is killing buu, but Gotenks could do anything. He could even kill Buu! You know how much we always wanted that.

Piccolo: "Then let's just --

Goku: "We'll take Gotenks."

 To be fair, it's not like there was any guarantee that SSJ3 Goku could win. Sure, he had the advantage while fighting Fat Buu, but when your enemy is nigh-indestructible with almost limitless reserves of stamina, you're still going to be having a difficult time finding a way to neutralise the threat.
