The great characters, the unique DB Universe and it's interpretation of Ki techniques that make all the techniques possible and feel organic, as well as its unique interpretation of earth. No over reliance on melodrama or complexities to keep the plot compelling and engaging while still giving depth and meaning to the characters and the story as a whole. The emotional moments are also extremely well placed, and the fact that the series doesn't lend itself to be emotional gives more impact to them Hell, it has all the makings for the greatest show of all time in my book. One word. Characters. Characters are what make this franchise so wonderful. There's nothing particularly compelling about it's narrative, but the characters keep things interesting. Plus it's lore is just so fantastic. Gods, aliens, magic, the supernatural, and planet shattering combat! It's just great. |

It took silly concepts and silly characters and made me took the story seriously and made me care about even the most insignificant of characters, even some of the villains. It's one of those things that appear to be pretty dumb, but are in fact awesome. Think of Transformers or TMNT. |
Piccolo: Just how many people have you sacrificed?! Cell: Sacrifice? Hmph, rubbish! On the contrary, it is an honor to become a fraction of my power. | |

Not necessarily. That's an appeal to popularity. It's like saying that Christianity must be great because so many people follow it. If you think so, more power to you, if you don't, that's cool too. Dragon Ball had a funny way of keeping people interested, I suppose. The first arc wasn't all that popular, apparently. Toriyama then decided to do a tournament, since those were popular in Dr. Slump, iirc. Then he switched it up to a more adventure-esque format, then back to the tournament, before going for a darker tone. And so on. I don't think it's the most varied thing ever or anything and I'm not saying it's all that creative (although the 'battle shounen' format hadn't been quite revolutionized yet, yes), but you can see why people would keep coming back for more. Plus Goku's such a lovable kid at the beginning, so naturally most fans would want to stick around for him even after he grew up. |

1. Great villains. The hero of the show is usually defined by the adversity they have to face at the end of determines what type of hero Goku/Gohan/Vegeta truly are. King Piccolo, Piccolo Junior, Vegeta, Frieza and Cell. 2. Slapstick comedy, I love it. Unfortunately Dragonball Z has became a Saiyan love feast (no pun attended). Unless you're a saiyan, you're not going to get any screen time, Piccolo, Tien and Kaioshins are thrown away to the side. |

Dragon Ball itself at least started off with more variety in it. You didn't know what was going to happen during the entire thing. DBZ is popular probably under the same reason people love Hellsing so much. It's just mindlessly entertaining on a visual sense. Both series have almost little but the most basic of plots and little development as well. They both also have their own share of plotholes and inconsistencies as well. But some amazing visual effects, great acting, and just intense action scenes, it keeps you focused despite the fact that overall, they really are nothing more than something a kin to a glorified B-Movie. This really becomes obvious after the Freeza Arc once the animation has picked up the pace. Depending on the animator at the time, you have stuff that looks really good visually. I mean the Boo Arc is a terrible mess filled with the most blatant amount of inconsistencies in the entire series probably with very little flow. Doesn't help that the anime adds even more BS to it. Overall, from a story point of view...it's awful. But by goodness if Goku vs Majin Vegeta isn't just super soaked with awesome sauce. Look at the Michale Bay movies like Transformers. In terms of story telling, characters, development...it's a mess. But hey...Optimus Prime ripped off someone's face...and that's enough for an audience to continue watching. |

... Something about it... I can't explain it. Maybe it's the simplicity in the story, the characters, and something about it that makes you be in the moment with it. |

The unique character designs. I love the design of these characters. The comedy is placed perfectly as well as the emotional scenes. The story telling is simple yet interesting. The characters are also simple yet interesting and likable. And like prince mentioned, the lore is cool. It has everything. The series doesn't try to be more than what it is. No unnecessary drama like most anime have. There's a great blend of comedy and serious action. The build up this series has is great too. You can say it drags for a while sometimes but it always leads up to something huge in the end. Huge as in epic and badass fight scenes where the fate of the planet, Galaxy, or even universe is at stake The show has its dark and complex moments but it still goes back to the main point: entertainment. It's amusing. No other anime has been as much fun for me to watch |

Also, I'm sure a lot of us love the series because it's been a part of our young lives. We are overrating it in a sense, but with kind intent. |

Right now, there are tons of manga better than dragon ball. However dragon ball is loved by many because it is a part of their childhood, was one of the best manga of it's time and also had memorable characters, and was action packed. |

Honestly, I think it's still better than most battle shonen from an objective standpoint |
