In every new racing game I've played over the last few years the AI has just been awful. Awful in that you're blatantly playing with a bunch of bots, they all drive in exactly the same line and basically do nothing but that, no overtaking or aggressive behaviour it's pretty clear that there's a set leaderboard and they drive along to that(unless you make them crash) So you're just left to go between the gaps and try become first. It's a bit different with more violent racers like Mario Kart where you get weapons and stuff...but it still feels really inorganic. In Mario for instance it's pretty clear that like 3 AI get picked at random to be competitors for a race, easier to notice in Grand Prix. Competitors as in they will always be near the top of the leaderboard while the others will always be low down, instead of everyone having equal chances. Are developers just lazy or what? I remember playing Need For Speed Most Wanted(the good one) way back in the day and drivers would be all over the road, they felt like actual drivers not mindless robots. They'd smash stuff to create obstacles, overtake you, ram you etc etc Some of it felt really scripted for sure but it's still way more fun than racing against a mindless conga line. These days they don't even react to you either most of the time, noticeable with Driveclub where they drive in their robot line and don't move for anyone. If you knock them out of the line they go right back in like nothing happened...even if you're right there, you just get shoved over because all the AI wants to do is stay in it's line. |
