With the release of Windows 10 I decided to go ahead and upgrade on the first day for multiple reasons. One was to see how well or bad a first day release Operating System works, to test it out from the start so I can let my friends and family know if they should go ahead and upgrade now or wait a little while, the last was me being so impatient to five it a try that I couldn't wait any longer.

I'm going to break this down into multiple parts, one will be a so far day by day experiences, the second will be what's the same and what's not and the last will be what should be on Windows 10 but isn't.

Day To Day:

On the first day I couldn't download any Apps without multiple attempts, as a matter of fact sometimes some Apps would be partially through a download and the Store would just crash or completely freeze up entirely. Of course with this being a first day release, some Apps weren't working properly and would randomly crash for no reason, even with just leaving them open. I did experience a lot of lag when opening Apps or just trying to customize the start menu or the task-bar.

On the second day the App store ran much more smoothly and all the multiple download attempts were now gone, but I still kept experiencing a lot of lag when running programs like Edge, Store, Solitaire and even Mahjong. However, by the end of the day the system started to run much better and I could even play games like Half Life 2 all the way to Ghostbusters The Video Game, I've seen reports of Windows 10 being able to handle Skyrim pretty good too. I also decided to see how well Edge could hold up when having multiple tabs open and constantly refreshing them every few minutes, or opening multiple tabs. Edge seemed able to maintain this for a while, but then it crashed way too often or would just freeze up completely, so I was forced to switch back to Google Chrome.

On the third day I decided to while continue what I've been doing so far, but also test out Cortana. It's hit or miss, and you have to make sure you're speaking clearly or you'll get something that's completely opposite of what you wanted. I found her to be very witty and could potentially be very sassy like Jarvis from the Iron Man Movies, logically that's the direction they're headed. I was hoping more results would show up in a pop up box from the task-bar and not as many browser results. From what I've seen this feature works better on Tablets than Desktops, which I was hoping they would be the exact same, hopefully in the future we'll get an update that takes care of this.

What's the same and what's different:

Like the past versions of Windows you have Wordpad, Paint, Snipping, Notepad...the usual basic Windows starter programs. They look pretty much the same they did in Windows 7, and they work just as good...it's almost like they just copy and pasted them on 10's interface, but I know it's more complicated than that and they just decided not to change what's been working so far. Now you do get Internet Explorer in Legacy mode, because not everything is compatible with Windows 10 yet, that'll come through multiple updates. You can still pin your music, pictures, documents and downloads folders to the start menu, but the option to allow each folder to expand showing your files without opening the folder is no longer there, which is a very disappointing because I liked looking at my files without opening Windows Explorer. That's been replaced with File Explorer, not sure why but Microsoft deemed it necessary to change the name. If you open the start menu it's now a happy marriage between the tile interface of Windows 8 and the start menu of Windows 7 and Classic Windows. On your right you have tiles you can pin and unpin, you can adjust the sizes of most tiles and most of the tiles for Apps have the live tile which is just a display of what the App looks like and some of it's features without having to open it, but this is still very buggy and not all tiles are consistent when live tile is on. Now you no longer have to install Windows Live, Mail comes with 10 and like before you can add multiple accounts, but the option to merge both accounts to view all mail in one inbox has been removed as well. There's a very controversial decision Microsoft has made, if you have Home Edition you can no longer pick and choose which updates you want, Windows will install them all even if you don't like them. However, this is not the case for those who own the Professional Edition, you can pick and choose what you want to install. Probably the most controversial decision that's been made is Microsoft can now see what files you use and websites you visit, they're saying this is to determine the right advertisement for you, so you don't get some random Ad that has nothing to do with what websites you visit or what files you use. This could be very useful, but it should be an option.

In closing...Windows 10 shows a lot of promise and has a lot of Potential, but in it's very early stages I don't find the system to be very stable on my computer, which shouldn't be a problem because Microsoft assured us that it would preform just as good as Windows 8 and 7 did, well Windows 7 ran much better than 10 does. However, it does seem to be running a lot better today than it has, and I've pushed it harder today than the previous days. It does seem like Microsoft has listened to the fans and consumers this time around, but it appears they only met us halfway so far, but with how Microsoft talked about how they're going to handle updates from here on out, once 10 is completely stable it seems the missing features will be added once that's done.

Personally, to anyone who doesn't like being a beta tester or using an Operating System to see it's natural progression to complete stability, then I do not recommend Windows 10 to you right now. I say wait at least a few weeka at least before updating. I haven't tried the clean install yet, so I can't tell you if 10 runs any better or not. You can put an ISO on a DVD or Flash Drive and use it later, and it doesn't expire. When you get the ISO, that's your copy of Windows 10 for life, so there's no need to worry about losing your copy if you don't upgrade or clean install right away.

After Thought:

I did a fresh install and I don't seem to be having any of the problems I had before. As a matter of fact, this computer has never run so smooth. However, if you have a Netgear wireless adapter you will get blue screen errors after installing the software and plugging in the adapter. You can fix this and it's very simple, but this is a problem that shouldn't exist if the software has compatibility issues with Windows, then it should run compatibility tests automatically until it finds a compatible setting. I do recommend Windows 10 to anyone who has simple to moderate computer knowledge, but not to people who have an outdated computer and don't know anything computers, not until Microsoft fixes these compatibility issues.
