UEFA Champions League & Europa League 2015/16

It truly was a Shawshank redemption

Thought I'd create a topic for both competitions. Has anyone been paying attention to the qualifying rounds?

West Ham only managed to squeeze through on penalties. I find myself saying it a lot, but I'll never understand why English teams don't seem to take the Europa League seriously. I know they qualified in the end, but what's the point in risking elimination by playing a weakened team? My cousin is a West Ham fan and is talking a lot about expectations for this season, but I think he's overreaching. He wants European qualification and a good Europa League run, but I don't think they're capable of either. The top 6 is seemingly locked up, in whatever order, and Southampton and Swansea will most likely be behind them. They'll do well to finish in the top half.

Celtic seemed to qualify comfortably, although my Grandad wasn't happy with some of the performances. He said the scorelines flattered them and if they had been facing a team with better finishers, it would have been a lot closer. He's never happy with them though :P

Great performance. Recent history has made me wary of optimism, but I really like our chances against Sevilla. Really looking forward to the final.

The pub was crazy. So crazy it was annoying. I will never get the people who scream at the screen as if the opposition players can hear them. When Soldado was taken off, two or three guys were shouting at the top of their voice, swearing at the screen with hand gestures, and that also happened when they showed shots of the Villareal fans (fans who, even if they could hear, didn't deserve that considering how supportive they've been of the Justice for the 96 campaign). I don't get that behaviour at all, having all that anger inside them waiting to come out.

If Liverpool wins, does that mean they get Champions League football?

Yep. Much better way of doing so than finishing 4th in the league considering you get the cup run and the trophy, but obviously a riskier route.

Ah, I think I get it. The rules confused me, but one CL Group Stage spot is reserved for the CL title holder, if the title holder manages to qualify for the group stage again the next year (which is pretty much the case every year) then that spot goes to the EL winner. So winning the EL pretty much guarantees CL football.

Even if the CL winner doesn't qualify for the group stages (like you said, almost guaranteed, although it's happened a couple times before, like with Liverpool in 2005), the EL winner qualifies for the play-off round.

I respect Diego Simeone's tactical brilliance and Atleti's defensive cohesiveness, but I am not a fan of the way they play. 10 men behind the ball no matter the opposition and no matter the score line. Bayern and Barcelona are better teams than Atletico despite what the scoreline indicated. I don't think Atleti's style can last, it never has for Jose Mourinho, who plays a similar style.

All of Atletico's best players have left the club for years because I feel players don't enjoy playing the way Diego Simeone forces Atleti to play as well as the fact that it's a grueling play style that players can't keep up over the years. At some point, Simeone is not going to be able to replace Antoine Griezzman or Saul or Koke the way he has replaced Diego Costa, Falcao, Aguero, Turan over the years.
You say that, but then Atletico have shown a consistent knack for replacing players people thought they couldn't dating back to when Torres left. Torres turned into Aguero and Forlan, who then turned into Falcao, into Costa, into Griezman, and that's just goalscorers. Once or twice is a fluke, multipe times is an example of a good scouting network. We have no reason to believe they'll just suddenly lose that skill just because you don't think they can keep it up.

Also, Bayern and Barcelona are not better teams than Atletico because Atletico beat both of them over two legs (and could possibly pip Barcelona to the title). Bayern and Barcelona may play better football, they may have better players, they may have a more successful history, but at this moment in time they aren't a categorically better team. If Atletico were doing s*** in the league but good in Europe, or good in the league but s*** in Europe, or they beat Bayern but not Barca, or vice versa, then yeah, maybe you'd have a point. But they have done all of the above. Sure, you can dislike their style of play, but disliking them is not reason enough to declare them a worse team, when evidence suggests otherwise.
I've seen it firsthand with Arsenal. Once the trophies dried up and our top players wanted to leave, Wenger let them and tried to replace them cheaply and never has. Bear in mind, Wenger is famous for his scouting department and ability to find cheap, unknown players as well. It won't last. There's a reason why Bayern, Barcelona, Real Madrid dominate football. It's because they can buy expensive, finished products. Atleti doesn't have that pull.

Every stat from Barcelona's and Bayern's matches with Atleti point to dominance in Bayern and Barcelona's favor. Chances created, possession, passing stats. All of it. I'm sure you watched the matches and anyone with eyes could see Bayern and Barcelona, especially Bayern, were dominating. Credit to Atleti for withstanding the pressure AND making the most of their few opportunities, but it was clear to me that Bayern and Barcelona were playing better personally.

Crazy Awesome Legend

Liverpool went in the dressing room at half time, York City came out in the second half. Because I'm pretty sure I just watched a Conference team get beat by Sevilla and not Liverpool.

Yeah, just an awful performance second half. Heads dropped when we conceded the early goal and we just never looked like we were in the game after that.

Too bad. Would rather have seen Liverpool in the CL than Sevilla. But I guess you get what you deserve. Sevilla now with their 3rd EL in a row. And not only that, it's the third consecutive year that all major European competitions (Super Cup, CL and EL) are won by Spanish clubs. I guess Spain truly does have the best clubs in this period of time.

Yeah, putting aside Liverpool's dire display, Sevilla's performance in the Europa League over the last 10 years is crazy. Winning the last three (which is even more unlikely considering they started this year in the Champions League group stages) and they've won 5 of the last 11. Quite an achievement.

Here in Spain the clubs learn from their youth the true winner mentality. Most Spanish clubs play it very tactically. Only pressing when there is need, playing slow when its needing, and 'killing' the game when they are winnen and 15 minutes is left. Besides that they have very technical players. Most players are from the youth (besides Real Madrid) and so they are used to play together since their teenagers years. That is why Spanish clubs are soo dominant.
