UEFA Champions League & Europa League 2015/16

It truly was a Shawshank redemption

Thought I'd create a topic for both competitions. Has anyone been paying attention to the qualifying rounds?

West Ham only managed to squeeze through on penalties. I find myself saying it a lot, but I'll never understand why English teams don't seem to take the Europa League seriously. I know they qualified in the end, but what's the point in risking elimination by playing a weakened team? My cousin is a West Ham fan and is talking a lot about expectations for this season, but I think he's overreaching. He wants European qualification and a good Europa League run, but I don't think they're capable of either. The top 6 is seemingly locked up, in whatever order, and Southampton and Swansea will most likely be behind them. They'll do well to finish in the top half.

Celtic seemed to qualify comfortably, although my Grandad wasn't happy with some of the performances. He said the scorelines flattered them and if they had been facing a team with better finishers, it would have been a lot closer. He's never happy with them though :P

Don't need them against Liverpool. They're defence is so bad they might as well leave them at home.

t LIVERPOOL VS MAN UNITED, that's a massive tie, first time in Europe.
Kind of underwhelming that it comes in the Europa League though lol. Should be good though, hopefully we (Utd) get a few of our injured first team players back by then.
Yeah, it really shows how both teams have fallen from previous graces (Man Utd's grace period obviously being more recent).

Last 16 draw for Europa League:

Shakhtar v Anderlecht
Basel v Sevilla
Villarreal v Bayer Leverkusen
Athletic Bilbao v Valencia
Liverpool v Manchester United
Sparta Prague v Lazio
Borussia Dortmund v Tottenham Hotspur
Fenerbahce v Braga.

Quite a few juicy ties there, but LIVERPOOL VS MAN UNITED, that's a massive tie, first time in Europe. Honestly, we haven't had the greatest luck against United of late, so I'm not too optimistic, but really looking forward to it.
That looks like an exciting Europa League. Take our Braga and Sparta Prague and these could very well be CL fixtures.

I'm going to give it to Shakhtar, Sevilla, Villarreal, Bilbao, Man United, Lazio, Borussia Dortmund and Fenerbahçe

It's draws like this that make me think it's somehow fixed. I mean, not really, but come on, Klopp draws Dortmund? Ah well, if we're gonna win it we'd have to play them at some point, might as well get it out the way early.

I think Tottenham made them look better than they were because they didn't play a full strength squad. Don't get me wrong, they're good and are definitely favourites for this tie and the competition, but they'll get a much tougher game from us.

Edit: I forgot to include the Champions League draw:

Wolfsburg v Real Madrid
Bayern Munich v Benfica
Barcelona v Atletico Madrid
Manchester City v Paris Saint-Germain

Tough draw for City and Barcelona, both should be good ties to watch.

Barcelona out in the quarter finals. The way they've been playing recently, they might not even win the league. I'm a big fan of Athletico and Anton Griezmann, so this pleases me.

Yeah, they've been on a poor run of form lately. Going out against Atletico isn't really a poor result, since they're a good team, but Barca will have to be disappointed to not make at least the semi-finals.

Madrid did well to overturn that first leg deficit. It's crazy how many good players they have, yet how much they still rely on Ronaldo. Just goes to show how good he is.

Psyched for the Liverpool/Dortmund game tomorrow. Anfield should provide a great atmosphere and I'm optimistic about our chances.

Amazing. I honestly pegged it as game over at half-time, as I'm sure a lot of people did. Crazy game.

Sevilla just beat Athletico Bilbao on penalties. I'm confident that Liverpool could beat them.

Champions League draws for the Semi-Finals:

Manchester City VS Real Madrid
Atlético Madrid VS Bayern München.

Don't really care for the first match, two teams I don't really like. As for Atlético VS Bayern, I hope Atlético can win.

Europa League:

Shakhtar Donetsk VS Sevilla
Villarreal VS Liverpool.

I'll be rooting for Shakhtar and Liverpool. All 4 teams are great, the EL final is going to be good this yeat.

I think based on current forms, Atletico can beat Bayern comfortably. Manchester City are f***ed unless Real Madrid play poor like they sometimes do.

Liverpool can beat Villarreal if they fix their defence. The other game I don't give a s*** about. Flip a coin.

Madrid have shown that even if they have poor first leg, they're not likely to have a poor second one. I think they should have enough to beat City (enough being Ronaldo). Atletico vs Bayern is a toss-up. I'd edge more towards Atletico since they beat Barcelona, plus Munich have looked iffy, but they have such a great squad it's hard to rule them out.

I think Liverpool can handle Villareal, but yeah, defence needs to tighten up. We'll feel unbeatable after that Dortmund game, which will give us a bit of an edge (although hopefully that doesn't turn into complacency). Bilbao and Donetsk is another toss-up. I think the winner is in the Liverpool/Villareal bracket.
