Thought I'd create a topic for both competitions. Has anyone been paying attention to the qualifying rounds? West Ham only managed to squeeze through on penalties. I find myself saying it a lot, but I'll never understand why English teams don't seem to take the Europa League seriously. I know they qualified in the end, but what's the point in risking elimination by playing a weakened team? My cousin is a West Ham fan and is talking a lot about expectations for this season, but I think he's overreaching. He wants European qualification and a good Europa League run, but I don't think they're capable of either. The top 6 is seemingly locked up, in whatever order, and Southampton and Swansea will most likely be behind them. They'll do well to finish in the top half. Celtic seemed to qualify comfortably, although my Grandad wasn't happy with some of the performances. He said the scorelines flattered them and if they had been facing a team with better finishers, it would have been a lot closer. He's never happy with them though :P |

I'd prefer Ancelotti. Guardiola's style is too possession based. |

Can't believe Man United didn't make it out of that group.... I thought for certain when I was watching the draw that they'd top the group... Van Gaal out at the end of the season I say. |

Well at least all the other English teams are through. Not that I like any of them. Nor do I expect any of them to get much further. |

England could really do with a team getting a long run in either of the European competitions, preferably multiple teams. I think we're at risk of losing a Champions League qualification spot because of the poor run our teams have had in Europe as of late. |

England is still quite far ahead of Italy on the UEFA coefficient, can't see any Italian teams getting much further than English teams either. So doubt that'll happen. How seriously do you guys think Van Gaal will take the Europa League? |

Not very at all. It is kind of beneath United. Well at least it should be. |

There's only 3 points between them, England has 69 and Italy has 66. In the past 2 years, Italy have had 1 finalist in the Champions League and 3 semi-finalists in the Europa League, whereas England have only had 1 semi-finalist, Chelsea in the Champions League, so it's closer than you'd think. |

Juventus last year was an exception, ever since 2010 they didn't get any further than quarter finals. Juventus is also the only Italian team that can seriously compete in the CL, Napoli, Lazio, Roma, the Milano clubs are all very lacking these days. And Napoli was not a finalist in the EL, they were semi-finalist. Besides, it's only the EL, to put that feat into perspective: Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk achieved 2nd place. |

still Italy had more teams in both competitions when all the british teams were eliminated, and speaking of European Competitions, you should know that Italian teams have won more cups in Europe. and as for Juventus, they were absent from Europe all these years because they've been in Serie B and after their promotion they needed some years to rebuild their club economically.

PSG looked a class above Chelsea. I think this round is as far as Chelsea deserve to go. Arsenal have to play Barcelona next. I'd be surprised if Arsenal score more than one goal. |

Last 16 draw for Europa League: Shakhtar v Anderlecht Basel v Sevilla Villarreal v Bayer Leverkusen Athletic Bilbao v Valencia Liverpool v Manchester United Sparta Prague v Lazio Borussia Dortmund v Tottenham Hotspur Fenerbahce v Braga. Quite a few juicy ties there, but LIVERPOOL VS MAN UNITED, that's a massive tie, first time in Europe. Honestly, we haven't had the greatest luck against United of late, so I'm not too optimistic, but really looking forward to it. |

On the plus side, we're guaranteed at least one English team in the quarter finals. |

Kind of underwhelming that it comes in the Europa League though lol. Should be good though, hopefully we (Utd) get a few of our injured first team players back by then. |
We'll never be those kids again
