UEFA Champions League & Europa League 2015/16

It truly was a Shawshank redemption

Thought I'd create a topic for both competitions. Has anyone been paying attention to the qualifying rounds?

West Ham only managed to squeeze through on penalties. I find myself saying it a lot, but I'll never understand why English teams don't seem to take the Europa League seriously. I know they qualified in the end, but what's the point in risking elimination by playing a weakened team? My cousin is a West Ham fan and is talking a lot about expectations for this season, but I think he's overreaching. He wants European qualification and a good Europa League run, but I don't think they're capable of either. The top 6 is seemingly locked up, in whatever order, and Southampton and Swansea will most likely be behind them. They'll do well to finish in the top half.

Celtic seemed to qualify comfortably, although my Grandad wasn't happy with some of the performances. He said the scorelines flattered them and if they had been facing a team with better finishers, it would have been a lot closer. He's never happy with them though :P

West Ham has been looking pathetic tbh.

Only a 1-0 and 4-0 victory against a team that's barely professional.
then a 1-0 victory and 1-0 loss against Birkirkara from Malta... And they didn't even seem to be using an experimental team.
Next match is Astra Giurgiu, let's hope West Ham doesn't underestimate again.

Dutch teams have been getting mixed draws. Vitesse drew Southampton which is going to be pretty much impossible for them. AZ drew Istanbul Basaksehir, I don't know what to expect from them, they were new in the Turkish league which makes me confident, but then again they finished 4th in the Süper Lig this year just behing Besiktas which tells me they're good. Ajax drew Rapid Wien but I don't see them qualifying. They can beat Rapid but when they do they need to win again against Valencia, ManU, Bayer 04, Lazio or Sporting. Don't see them doing that.

No real surprises that I can see from the latest round of matches. Obviously a win would have been better, but a 2-2 away draw for Ajax is a decent result, meaning they'd go through with a 0-0 or a 1-1 draw.

Celtic squeezed out a 1-nil win. Probably should be looking more comfortable than that, especially since it's always possible to be upset when you play away against the 'lesser' teams.

I think people are overestimating the difference between Celtic and Qatabag, I agree Celtic is a better team but the difference isn't that high. Eastern European countries have been rising in quality rapidly. Qarabag already surprised last year beating FC Twente in the Europa League play-offs and then getting drawn into a horrible group with Saint-Étienne, Internazionale and Dnipropetrovsk, and still ending in 3rd place. Celtic on the other hand has been getting worse. Especially after Rangers FC left the Scottish league has been a walk in the park for them. Celtic is slacking and Qarabag is rising. Celtic should be happy to get the win here.

Southampton beat Vitesse 3-0 fairly comfortably tonight. I think they will go all the way. Win it? Probably not but definitely to the finals.

West Ham are just an embarrassment.

Win will probably go to a 3rd place CL group stage team. They'll definitely get far though.

West Ham actually looked pretty good the first half. Then they went back to their pathetic ways they showed against Birkirkara and gave a 2-0 lead away. Might be best if Astra Giurgiu just wins at home and let West Ham focus on the league. No major surprises besides that.
I saw on the app I use that the Kukesi VS Legia match was stopped, anyone know why? Fans go mental or something?

There is no excuse for not taking the Europa League serious anymore as it guarantees you Champions League football if you win it.

If Southampton, West Ham, Tottenham and Liverpool are in the Europa League this year then it'll be interesting to see if they actually but out their best teams and go for the win.

They should but for some reason UEFA just can't make the Europa League more appealing than it is now. Perhaps if it wasn't such an obvious minor league compared to the Champions League. It could be more exciting if the Europa League was as exclusive as the Champions League except CL would use league winners only and EL would use cup winners only. No BS with fair play, CL qualifying losers, CL group stage 3rd places, 5th-7th places of certain countries, etc.

Using cup winners only wouldn't make the competition better, in my opinion. You'd lose out on a bunch of big teams since most countries have one cup, usually two at the most. If you only have one team from the big nations, it takes away some of the prestige and neutral interest. Plus, if a team wins a cup but also qualifies for the Champions League, they'll choose the CL over the Europa League, then you'd have 1 less team in the competition with no way of replacing them (since if you allocated the spot to the losing finalist or bumped it to a league position, you'd be defeating the object of having only cup winners).

The Europa League will always be less appealing than the Champions League because by nature it's a 2nd tier competition. The Champions League spot is the only thing they could add to make it more appealing to teams, and for me that should work. It's hard to say yet whether that will work though, since it's only a one year old feature.

Also, money. CL has way, way more money than the EL. Also, the Premiership teams get more money for finishing mid-table in the league than they would get for going all the way in the EL, so it makes more sense to sacrifice a cup run for a league finish (I don't agree with that thought process, but my interests as a fan will be different from the interests of the club, it's board, and the manager).

I really hope West Ham are going to do better in the BPL than in the EL.
Their performance outside of England has been pathetic.

No surprise there. Once you get past the top 3, Dutch football is pretty sh*t as well.

My prediction is either Bilbao or Southampton is going to win it.
