Should todays society banned the 'N' word all together?

Entertainment mediums are going to keep using the word. Can you imagine a movie set before the abolition of slavery, or during the uprising of the KKK, where nobody used the "N word"? It'd be a huge inaccuracy.

"God dammit, you stupid colored folk!" doesn't have nearly the same intensity and truth as "God dammit, you stupid n)gger!"

It'd be like turning the slavery days into PG shlock.

But the point is, movies and music (particularly rap/hip-hop) are going to use the word regardless. It'd be ridiculous to allow only that sort of use but ban it for the general public.

Short answer? No!

Long answer?

To ban the "N" word, you would also have to ban every racial slur that's ever been used. If not, then you're showing favoritism towards African Americans...which wouldn't be right at all. And not just racial slurs, any kind of slur of any kind, so offensive slurs towards stereotypes, different types of lifestyles and even spiritual beliefs, or non-believers too. Then where does it stop, because in today's society it's all about hand holding and trying not to offend anyone, so it wouldn't end there, it would get to the point where free speech is no longer allowed...that scares me.

It's a very slipper slope when it comes to messing with what people can and can't say, at least in America. I'm not sure how you other countries deal with freedom of speech.

You really want to ban the word? Alrighty then, have fun banning years and years of literature and history. Nope, sorry schools. No more Mark Twain or To Kill a Mockingbird for you. Let's just forget it ever happened, right?

Everyone and their mother should know there is a difference between saying the N word the way black people use it and saying it in a racial slur.

Excuse me for my post but I feel it is necessary to convey my point across. WARNING HATEFUL LANGUAGE ARE BEGIN USED.

Firstly N-I-G-G-A is a slang term Blacks use to play fight or address our friends/family. It is also a term that blacks use to insult members of our race when they upset us in majority. Other words that mean the same thing as this N-word are ninja, my nig ect. Rappers use this term and vidoe games such as GTA use this term.

If a white friend is close enough to you it is okay to say this to them if you let them or you will tell them not to say it around you. If someone uses this to you in anger it is also a racial slur and will anger Black people to the point of fighting.

Now N-I-G-G-E-R is the term that was used during slavery times as a hate word and in the dictionary this means stupid. This version of the N-word will cause fighting between Blacks and all races including other African Americans every time there here this version.

I don't think any word should be banned due to having a freedom of speech but those that use these terms should know that their are consequences to their actions such as Hulk Hogan, initial I myself wasn't upset with what Hulk Hogan said but then I heard the comments he made about his daughter and finally the comments that he made about the Rock, I just wish WWE would have left him in 2k16 so I could have taught him a lesson but that is another topic for another day.

Another thing I don't like is when other races so it isn't fair that Blacks are the only ones who can use the N-word, there is no reason for another race to use the N-word unless their in the privacy of their own home, working on a movie or even trying to teach a class or give a speech and in the same token Blacks shouldn't be using racial terms to other races as well.

If one race throws a slur out they should expect to get the same slur sent right back at them.

Don't people already go crazy about that?

I'm sure they did over movies like Django Unchained.

"Oh my GOD they called that slave back in slavery days the N word somebody should tell the police!"

Another thing about banning one race from using it...what if you're just trying to sing along to some rap? Have you got to just take an abrupt pause whenever an N word comes up.
A bit ridiculous...

People shouldn't get so riled up over it, the slavery of the past is as said in the damn past, keep it there instead of acting like any white usage of the word is equivalent to you being whipped and put in chains your whole life.

It shouldn't be taken any more harshly than being called fat, ugly, stupid or whatever. While it's not nice to be called anything negative if you can brush it off then you're the strong and mature person there.
To let name calling affect you is to let the person succeed in their intentions.

To be fair, wasn't the rant caught in a sex tape? If the tape itself was leaked and not released intentionally by those involved, Hogan would reasonably assume that his rant and thoughts would stay private.

Hogan also called thw Rock the n word in another interview. There are three different videos where he used the word and two were in anger.

Spoiler alert: I'm not black, so I don't experience the word in the same way, and because I'm a white male, there's not really a word that I can experience in the same way (ruined m'day, shout out to Louis CK).

But no. No word should be banned. Except 'Voldemort'.

Just embrace yourself in black culture for a few months and you'll be able to experience the word in the exact same way.

There is no reason you can't. The only difference between you and a black man is the colour of your skin.

I'm an avid hip-hop fan, so I am immersed in a certain area of black culture. But no, I can not experience the word in the same way. The word is intertwined with the oppressive history of blacks in America. There are many young-to-middle-aged black people whose parents and grandparents lived in a time where segregation and discrimination was rife. They also know that the only reason that they are in America is because their ancestors were brought over to be used as slaves. Throughout all this time, the word 'LOOK AT ME! I'M BEING RACIST!' was used as a derogatory term that denoted somebody as less of a human being for the mere fact that their skin differed and therefore the use of that word has the power to evoke that horrible time in human history. There is no way for me to know what it is like to have those feelings because my ancestors did not experience the same discrimination and terrible treatment so recently in my history. I can acknowledge that this was a terrible thing and sympathise with black people over this history, but I do not, and can not, ever experience it in the same way, because it is not a personal experience to me.

How does the experiences their ancestors had have any affect on them?

Spoiler: click to toggle

It isn't a personal experience to them. They have no idea what it was like for their ancestors. Their history does not extend any further than the day they were born.

WW2 is not a personal experience to me; however, I am descended from people who fought in WW2.

It affects them because they know that the only reason they are an American is because of what their ancestors went through. It affects them because they know that in the lifetimes of their grandparents people of their skin colour were treated as less of a human being. If you grow up in the knowledge that 60 years ago you wouldn't be allowed in certain areas of a town because of your skin colour, how could that not affect you?

I'd probably go and dance around in that area and celebrate the social victory. Then I'd go about my day knowing that my ancestors won the war and I'm an equal member of society.

My ancestors were brought over as prisoners of war and were only allowed in their cells. The only reason I'm here is because they were captured.

My only take away is that I'm lucky to have been born in the greatest country on Earth. :D
