Should todays society banned the 'N' word all together? The reason why i asked is because there have been reported many times in sports locker rooms (NFL, NBA) black athletes have used the word as playful against each other. We hear rappers such as 2Pac, Snoop, Ice Cube, Ice T all say the word in interviews and in their lyrics. I'm not blind, I can see them being African-American and its not the same as a white man saying the 'N" word. But i thinks it stupid solely based on the fact white, black and latinos young males look up to these heroes. If they hear their heroes saying these word, the kids would try to imulate them. Remember the 2014 or 2013 innocent in the NFL locker room... [i for got his name] called a African-American the 'n' word. If anybody is unfamilir, Hulk Hogan just got fired for using that racists remark in a interview. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vSznA--Xul8 What is your opinion? |

No. No word should be banned. That's preposterous. |

How do you stop kids from using that word if they hear rappers talk like that? |

I don't, if they're American. They can use whatever word they want. |

I understand the history in the US behind the n word specifically, but I still don't believe that warrants banning the word. Why just the n word? Why not all other racial slurs as well? |

Because of the history of slavery and other racists hurtful words should be banned too in my opinion.

Just let the black people say it and no one else say it. Do the same with all other races and their words and everything will be fine. |

Who gets which words? It'd be a huge legal mess. |

But don't you see? No other racial slur carries the same type of negativity and offensivity (not a word) as the n word. Nobody says the s word for spic or the c word for cracker. And again I'm not ignoring the racism that occurred in the US towards African Americans but for crying out loud, there's a football team called the redskins. |

It shouldn't be banned since that goes against freedom of speech, but it should be highly discouraged for anyone except black people. |

Protecting freedom of speech is more important than protecting peoples feelings. We as a society should shame these people, we don't need government force to do it. |

For the word to lose it's meaning one of two things have to happen: 1) The word stops being used entirely, becomes a relic and no one even knows what it means. 2) The word is used so much that everyone becomes desensitized to it and it loses it's meaning (or it's meaning changes). We're basically going through number two right now. Since a hundred years ago the word had an entire different meaning than it does today. Who knows how it'll be in another hundred years. Personally I don't like the word and would be completely fine if everyone decided to stop using it. Banning it is a bit much. However strongly discouraging the use in public would be more than fine by me. |

Using it even in a casual manner without malicious intentl perpetuates the problem, but racism would still exist even if that word didn't. |

But I also feel that a group claiming a word for their own and refusing to allow anyone else to use it, allows the word to retain its power. Its power to upset remains for whenever someone who isn't meant to say it, wants to say it.
