What's so special about Bernie Sanders? I mean he seems like a good guy and I agree with his views, but what makes him different?
He doesn't placate to either party's agenda. Being an independent gives you the freedom to step outside the "Democrat vs Republican" debate, in which most candidates are victims of the partys' agendas, abandoning their own beliefs because of pressure from other party members.
With both party's agendas, most of their arguments are to mainly disagree with the other party regardless if the candidate themselves believes what they're advocating for.

You could ask why the candidates just simply don't do what they personally believe, but have you ever tried working with people that you disagree with or don't get along with?
It's incredibly difficult. In addition to this, those other party members may or may not endorse you. If they don't endorse you, you lose potential votes from their constituents or their supporters.
For example, it didn't become customary for candidates to associate with churches until after Lincoln was in office. Obama has been accused of being Muslim, but he is part of a Christian church. Your religious views can greatly influence how others feel about you as well.
For example, it's illegal in 7 states for open Atheists to hold public office.

Even though Sanders' views are independent, they are more liberal democrat than they are conservative republican. This is mainly why he's stated that he'll be running as a democrat instead of republican. The reason why he's doing this is because no independent ever gets into the white house.

Sanders's views are mainly focused on domestic issues, which we need more of. Most of the candidates in both parties are focused mainly on international issues or domestic issues (more opinions) that don't really fix core problems, an act which alienates the fundamental needs of the citizens.
Republican Ron Paul focused mainly on domestic issues during his campaign in 2012, and even though he was Republican, he really seemed to more advocate for liberal Democratic views.

Stupid noob question, why can't we create a new party that has all the good from all parties and disregard the bad?

Crazy Awesome Legend

People worm their way in who don't have any convictions. They are only after selfish opportunities. So a good idea becomes tainted by all those who's hearts aren't in it. This problem is made even worse by the fact that parties need funding. Funding attracts too many of the wrong people.

Since this a age of tech, why can't everything be done online instead of spending money on paper flyers?

Advertising on the internet, newspaper, and tv also cost money. I mean Facebook is a new way to get votes I suppose, but I doubt that's enough for most

Because that excludes the people who either don't know how to use the internet, don't use a computer, or don't have enough money for either. Those people are the ones that actively go to political rallies and are typically above 60 years old.
Each politician knows that securing that vote first is important. Those are also the same people who rarely sway their vote, so securing it for one candidate or another is important.
