Which story arcs do you think were dark?
How dark do you think Dragonball could have gotten, and could get with later material?

The Saiyan and Freeza arcs were the only truly dark ones in DBZ. Cell Saga, albeit brutal, didn't have the same feel. And Boo saga was Boo Saga lol.

KP arc in DB was also pretty damn dark.

Taopaipai was probably are first, real serious villain that was treated with little quirks.

King Piccolo, Saiyan, Freeza and Cell were pretty much are darkest Arcs.

Freeza Arc overall was probably the darkest Arc but the entire thing with Trunks' Future was probably the darkest point in the series.

Albeit the Buu arc didn't have the same dark vibe as say the Saiyan or Frieza arc, Super Buu did cause the extinction of 99% of life on Earth and Kid succeeded in destroying Earth. In regards to terrible events that has occurred on Earth, that's pretty damn dark.

Future Trunks timeline was a pretty dark point as well.

I'd say the Piccolo Daimao arc was the darkest. He took out Shenron, which was the only way of reviving Krillin, Roshi and Chaozu. At the end of the fight, Goku didn't know what to do with himself because his closest friend and his master had died. Really depressing stuff.

Future Trunks' world was definitely the darkest thing in the series, but it wasn't it's own arc.

For the manga, it was definitely the end of the Freeza arc, where Namek was ready to explode.
For the anime, I'd say Freeza arc, Cell and especially the Boo arc. Also, History of Trunks was a pretty intense movie.
Well, more like "serious arcs".
Dragon Ball isn't that "Dark" at all.

The first half of the Cell saga before he reached perfection (I'd say even semi-perfection) was pretty dark. Cell sucking the life out of all the civilians and nobody being strong enough to fight the androids made it pretty grim.
