An opening can practically be what sells a series itself and the thing that gets you into it or it might be a boring pile of mess that doesn't even come close to expressing what the series is about. An bad anime may have a great opening or a great anime may have a bad or average one. For example Clannad is an amazing series but its opening, while hardly bad, is so typical to any other slice of life series that it could fit with anything. So I ask of you, what are your top five (in order or otherwise) favorite anime openings? For myself, again in no particular order. 1.) Cowboy Bebop: It feels almost unfair putting this down because it seems so obvious to me but why can't I? The song "Tank" really casts that epic feeling of adventure and sensationalism especially once that phrase "3-2-1, Let's Jam" kicks you off. It's upbeat and has that western tone that, as a western audience you can appreciate. Even its visuals is something that seems to flawlessly combine the western-like appearance with Japanese animation that helps it stand out both from its Japanese and Westernized counterparts. While I don't think "Tank" would be anywhere near my favorite songs, where its used here just adds to the greatness of a series well worth its praise. 2.) Hellsing (2003): While the anime was really nothing much and certainly falls well behind in the likes of the OVA series, if there's one thing the 2003 series did right it was the opening and the music. That amazingly catchy jazz tune of "World Without Logos" will forever be in your head and the animation easily lends up the tone of the series. It's trailer if you've ever seen it is perhaps even better in terms of animation, putting in work that in fluidity could rival some of the earlier Hellsing OVAs themselves. A damn shame because the episodes themselves didn't show nearly that same amount of animation, though did make up at least for having some kickass music. 3.) JoJo's Bizzare Adventure (New Series): Although as far as song goes I'll always prefer the first opening from Phantom Blood which I think is so damn catchy and memorable, what makes the opening for here great is simply the style put in. You get that sensation as if the literal manga panels have come to life showing off amazing fluidity and animation. It's openings that keeps you to attention every single time it appears. Especially when Dio decided to jack the opening in Stardust Crusade. 4.) Speed Grapher: Speed Grapher falls under that similar line of Hellsing and Cowboy Bebop in which the additions of a Western-like composition combined with its Japanese animation presents us with something that is without a doubt amazing. The inclusion of the song "Girls on Film" by Duran Duran (Sadly unable to be used in the English Edition of the series) is so damn catchy that like said before with the other openings here, you'll be listening to it again and again. The animation for the opening certainly doesn't disappoint either. 5.) Eden of the East: The thing is, I don't really care about the series itself. I think the animation is great and its premise is nice but I just never got into it. But I'll be damned if I didn't get into the opening. Hearing "Falling Down" by Oasis is simply an eargasm of epicness and its visuals? Damn! The sheer visuals thrown at you gives you something that stands out perfectly. There's practically a sense of realism to it. I may not care for the anime itself but I love that opening. So what about the rest of you? What are you 5 favorite openings in anime and why? Is it because of the music, the animation, what? Edited by EMIYA, Jul 10 2015, 09:10 PM.

Remember Accelerator these are the actual animated openings, not just the theme songs themselves. Since I"ll be damned if you don't put the Monotagari openings somewhere. |

5.Dragon Ball ah Dragon Ball, so often forgotten next to Z. But the song is very fun and the visuals match what to expect from the show very well. Only real flaw is that it isn't that great compared to the other stuff (in my opinion). Just pretty good over all. 4. Gosick is probably an oddity in that it is easily worse in terms of music than any of the others in this list and ones off it. So why's it on here then? Visuals, this has a lovely look to it, like a tarot card or story book, just very pretty pictures are on there, and the song, while not great, is good enough to hell the visuals along. 3. Mirai Nikki the second opening specifically, first of all, they managed to make blue exciting, really exciting, and a bit creepy too though that's not as impressive. This opening (if you can get past the engrish) is frightening and adrenaline filled, telling you pretty much everything you need to know about this through creepy visuals and the song itself, the song and animation flew well together, is just very good. 2. Monogatari. You can really just pick any of them and it would make it to the list, but I think I'll go for Nadeko Medusa for the sheer change from the Nadeko Snake opening. The first was adorable as heck, which fits portrayal shown there. Then you get Medusa and anyone who's watched since season one is wondering what the Heck is happening with the moe blob. The hint of unease and the total flip of everything from the first opening made me very interested to find out just what was happening. 1. Anohana This opening matches the premise perfectly. It tells what the show is about, the visuals are nice, and the song is good, plus the animation and music got together well. But it wouldn't have made number one with just that, so why's it here? It managed to make me feel nostalgic, for something I never really had. I didn't even know that was possible until I saw this opening. It made me yearn for this thing I never had, and don't usually care about. That's how it got on here, maybe no one else will get it, but is gonna take allot to dethrone this in my mind. I hope my list was if nothing else, interesting! Honorable mention to The World God Only Knows (all three openings) for it's amazing music, I didn't put it on here because... Well I didn't remember until now, but each of the songs in these are pretty good, with a nice opening to match, Another honorable mention goes to Legend of Galactic Heroes Sea of Stars, for just being a great song, nice animation, and for being an opening to one of the greatest works of both literature and animation ever. It didn't get on this list because not much happens, and it doesn't really hype up anything, it lets you know the show is on in it's own humble yet classy way. Edited by Tinny, Jul 13 2015, 02:16 AM.

5:Crayon Shin Chan - I haven't really watched this anime in any other language besides the spanish version, and honestly the spanish opening is so goddamn awesome I put it before any other version. 4:Spanish One Piece Opening 2 - That narrator just prepares you for the upcoming beautiful song. This is probably the only One Piece opening I believe is better in other languages. Spanish version is the only one that gets it right. 3:Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt - It's mindf*** but in a pleasing state. 2: Spanish DBZ Opening - This right here is my entire childhood. Same happens as the One Piece opening, the spanish version feels so much better. Plus, nostalgia bias. 1: BoBoBo - It's pretty self-explanatory, ain't it? |
Piccolo: Just how many people have you sacrificed?! Cell: Sacrifice? Hmph, rubbish! On the contrary, it is an honor to become a fraction of my power. | |

(As in Fifth being greatest here) 1. Really digging the Ushio and Tora opening, I wouldn't say the song itself is all that great but combined with the animation it gives such an old school feel, the black and white manga-esque panels are pretty cool too. Doesn't spoil a heap of s*** either. Well, it probably does but you'd have to actually look, you can watch it and not take anything from it that isn't obvious. 2. Naruto Shippuden opening 6 is a good one, hard to choose between it and 7 but I'd say the animation for 6 is better: 3. Lame as the series became Bleach had some good openings, the first is pretty damn stylish(well, was) 4 & 5, The Stardust Crusader openings are f***ing awesome. Old school sorta stuff seems to have a lot more thought put in to it more modern ones tend to just be a random pop song with some stuff happening that may or may not be relevant to the arc going on, feels kinda lazy. |
