Wow Copy, you got this all sorts of organized. Ok, it's a review you want eh? Well this looks like a job for the OG: SuperACE~!

Dragon Ball Super. Well, July 5th is finally here and we get our new version of Dragon Ball for the generation. And not gonna lie, it does start off on a strong note, just a little... tamer than I thought it was going to be. I suppose we'll get into the plot. Spoiler warning, everything is a spoiler ahead, not sure if this is pretty much a spoiler thread or not but hey, this is a thing now.

So the initial episode is a pretty basic little set up story that tells us what the story so far is and what's going to happen soon. Beerus and Whis are back, and it kinda feels like a prologue to Battle of Gods. Goku's off doing some radish farming in a pretty cool nod to "Yo Son Goku and his Friends Return" and Goten's out to help. I guess the story's going to be in a floating timeline. Anyway, some silly Goku eating shenanigans happen and the aloof as always Goku decides to slack off and do some training instead of getting work done (God that only makes sense in reference to Goku.) THen we get a cute little Goten rescue scene, played for laughs. I guess I read about this scene being in the manga with a different tone, but honestly I didn't sense much danger here. But hey, plot or whatever. Then the story shifts again to Beerus and Whis doing the usual feast thing before blowing up half a planet (Yes you read that right, they literally only atomize the southern hemisphere of the planet.) and then fly off to do another thing apparently. But no time for that now, Videl and Gohan are a thing, but no time for that because first Hercule has posturing to do with Majin Buu. Once that little bit of whiplash is ov, oh yeah and Piccolo is doing his usual Guardian Angel thing and looking after Gohan and his new sugar momma fiancé (Seriously, if I get Super Powers do I get to date the hot daughter of a rich Wrestling Star? I need Super Kungfu). But yeah, no more whiplash. Now we get the adventures of Goten and Trunks. Not enough to really fill the full 24 minute run time, but cute none the less.

The rest of the episode just centers on Goten and Trunks getting a wedding gift for Gohan and Videl (Did I miss something? Where was their wedding? I hope that gets an actual episode. I might've missed that on my top 11 DB Super list. If I did, call it the #12 spot.) Again a cute little concept. They go all around looking for the usual stuff women like, jewelry and cosmetics and such. And then they end up getting hot spin... well regular spring water because they're 8. Or 12. Or just because they're Goten and Trunks, probably that last one. There's a little break in the fun to fight a giant snake, then they fly home and present their present to the newly weds (Yeah they keep saying wedding present, I think Gohan and Videl are married at this point. Definitely aren't gonna get our wedding episode.) And then we get a real cute little scene where G & T present Videl with her "cosmetics." Videl is initially surprised that it's only water, but then seems to take it as a complement. She's like 21 at this point, the girl doesn't really need make-up and seems to internally resolve that this is a symbolic gesture and that the boys went through a lot of trouble just thinking of her. It's a really sweet scene, I may be reading into it a bit, but it shows off Goten and Trunks' cute naiveté and Videl's kind heart, a stark difference in her initial hard-to-get attitude from the seventh season.

And then the rest of the episode just sets up Battle of Gods. Ominous wind with Elder Kai and Kibito Kai, Goku ports off to train with King Kai, so on and so forth.

So now to break it all down.

Animation: The animation is stellar, well done and lit. You'll notice the stark difference in the 20 year old animation style seen in the Buu Saga, which was still a little old school at that point too (two years later in GT we see a much more modern style.) So now Dragon Ball looks like it's contemporary like One Piece or Shippuden. And very little to no more of that CG nonsense from Battle of Gods, looks much better.

Story: The story was... cute. Not good, not bad. Cute. It was pretty fun to watch and had a little bit of characterization for Videl, but I didn't feel like it expanded much. It's only the first episode so I give it a pass as far as content goes. The pace was a little weird. It felt like it was half way between the first couple episodes of GT where we're catching up with the characters after a decade and like Avatar's Tales of Ba-Sing-Se where we get a day in the life of everyone. Neither approach is bad, but I feel like we already knew what was happening around the universe, so it seems a little repetitive. It almost felt like they wrote the Tractor part of the episode and wrote the Wedding Present part of the episode as two separate episodes, couldn't' make it work on it's own, and decided to make them one thing.

Sound design: I like the sound track in this version quite a bit. Not quite as up beat or whistly as the other ones, just mellow and calm. Though the theme song doesn't get me quite as hype as Cha-la, Head Cha-la did. Or Step Into the Grand Tour. Or even Rock the Dragon. Out of all the Dragon Ball theme songs, I'd say Super is the weakest. The singer sounds kind of disinterested, like he knows he's just doing a Saturday Morning Cartoon theme song, but isn't willing to do anything about it. Not like FLOW with their remix of the Classic Head-Cha-La. I mean listen to them both.
Super's Theme
FLOW
Hopefully it's just the compression, Flow doesn't sound great on this video I picked either, but it was amazing in theatres. So who knows, different budget and such. But I feel like they had more kick to it. Maybe their lead singer is just better?

Pros: So the big things I love about this episode were the look and feel. It was fun loving and sweet, though harmless. It didn't try to go over the top and epic, which is OK. And we're established in the universe. The music is decent and the plot is shaping up.

Cons: On the downside, it had the same pacing problem Battle of Gods did. Stuff happened, but the story didn't feel fleshed out. Like they couldn't commit to one conflict for more than 10 minutes and had to strap two together. Nothing much was accomplished and episodic little episodes like these should set up more character and get some developed. Not as much of that as I would have liked. Like I said it was a harmless episode, but there wasn't much conflict either, so the episode wasn't so compelling to watch. Kinda so-so.

Overall, Super Episode One was pretty standard and fun. I'll give it a solid 7 out of 10. Gives me some hope about the series.

It was decent. A standard first episode/first episode of an arc. Goten and Trunks were funny and Gohan has too much game. Esiosdes don't become 10/10 until it's the climax of an arc even if we're talking about One Piece (pre Dressrosa because the anime adaption of that arc is filled with so much filler) or Hunter x Hunter 2011.

5/10 at best for me.

It felt like pure filler, although first episodes always feel that way.

Crazy Awesome Legend

I love these episodes where they are just living their lives. I find it really interesting seeing how they live day to day as opposed to hours of mindless brawling. I am kind of hoping that they keep the ethos of the show very light and non threatening like this episode was. All that heavy, serious stuff before is tiresome to me.

My goodness if I could marry a woman like Videl...

Lighting and use of colour was great but I'm not a fan of how characters in anime these days look so obviously pasted onto the background.

And Roshi at the end was funny.

I thought it was a very interesting episode capping up what has happened since they defeated Majin Boo. It also has that plot element with Beerus destroying planets around the universe to build suspense. Loved the little cameos of Piccolo and Kame-Sennin.

I loved the episode--I give it a 9/10. It was great because it kept me smiling the entire time. It's awesome to see everyone's relationship with each other; it seems Toriyama is showing us how close everyone has gotten over time.

I dig how Mr. Satan was involved in mostly everyone's lives, and Videl herself was the bomb of course. #Satan Style

One of Mr. Satan's cameramen is either his disciple back from the Cell Games or Sharpener.
Beerus is a spoiled brat, haha. The salt part killed me. I love his attitude.

I'm impressed, guys. I know this is gonna be great. I'm not even worried at all. Haha, I feel like a certain piece of happiness is coming back.

While it didn't really serve as a presentation for the characters we know and love, this amusing episode works as it's mostly comedic and prefers to just put these silly characters into silly situations without the need of being complex or anything like that, which follows the spirit of the original manga and anime. There's A LOT of comedy on this first episode, and I love every single bit of it, because it always happens in-character: ChiChi is overprotective, Mr. Satan is a loveable coward, Majin Boo is one fat hungry bastard, Roshi is one bad-ass pervert(YES!) and Goku is still the naive and innocent Superman that he has been since the beginning of the series, which I love. As a side-note, Beerus is a boss in this episode. "This dish is good, but not good enough. Away with [half of] your planet!"

I wanted more, but this episode was enough to restore my faith on this franchise. As if the movies weren't enough, I expect this anime to be awesome.

Piccolo: Just how many people have you sacrificed?!

Cell: Sacrifice? Hmph, rubbish! On the contrary, it is an honor to become a fraction of my power.
