I thought it was great. It had been so long since I last saw that movie that I barely remembered any of it so it was like watching a new movie. As with every Studio Ghibli movie, it just has that awesome feel to it. I wish there was a little bit more info on the sea of decay and stuff but what was presented in the movie was fine. The one thing I didn't like was the music in some of the parts was just really odd and out of place. I can't bring up an exact moment, but some of the times it just didn't fit at all. Of course there was also some good music cause Joe Hisaishi can definitely write amazing music. |

I think you nailed the issue with the music. I'm pretty sure this was Miyazaki's first time working with Hisaishi and while this world is different than the other Miyazaki movies (that I've seen), it does feel a bit strange. It doesn't transcend time like Hisaishi's other work and feels decidedly 80's. I still appreciate it in some capacity though. Still got that post up on my browser at home. I'm at work now and will finish it when I get home. Just chiming in. |

Yeah, the music wasn't spectacular. At the beginning of the film where Nausicaa is calming down the first ohm we see there was a bit of a ringtone sounding tune that was a bit ordinary. The lalala was a bit annoying, too. It's a shame because 'Legend of the Wind' was beautiful with the piano thrown in there. It's probably one of my favourites from any Miyazaki film: Best part kicks in around a minute into it. Edited by Jet, Jul 14 2015, 12:58 PM.

Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind How I rewatched it: Format: Blu-ray Language: Japanese. Subbed. (I've only seen the dubbed version previously) The World: Miyazaki is known for two things. His whimsical, magical, and mystifying storytelling and the worlds he builds. Nausicaa is no exception. The world of Nausicaa is one of my favorites of his because of how different it is. Post apocalyptic with a mix of post medieval and sci fi, the world is really unlike any I have seen since (that I can recall). Right from the first few scenes, you know you're stumbling into something wonderfully different. The tech, the clothing, the architecture, the wild life, and everything else you can imagine are a blend that is truly fascinating to me. Every detail is fleshed out just the right amount. The Characters: Nausicaa herself. Enough said. I know it's a little trite to be fascinated with the main character of a piece of fiction but I f***ing love Nausicaa. She is one of my favorite characters of any medium and of all time. To some, she might seem a little too...flawless (which is an annoying and simplistic characteristic when done incorrectly), but I think that's an over simplification here. We can address that more if anyone disagrees. The other characters is where the movie is lacking. Lord Pupa is pretty interesting and Kurotawa is kind of funny but the rest of the characters are give and take. Kushana could of been a lot more but felt like a tacked on villain and Asbel is kind of paint by numbers. The real characters are the world and Nausicaa here though. The Visuals: I think the film looks great considering when it was made. The animation is very still (a common trope in Japanese animation), but the art style and direction is beautiful in my opinion. The Themes: While not as enigmatic is some of his later films thematically, Nausicaa still has very powerful (while blatantly obvious) and poignant themes at work. Some which would be included in most of his later works. Anti-war and environmental themes are the obvious ones (Cough cough, Mononoke, cough cough), but there is some other interesting stuff going on beneath the surface. Responsibility, redemption, and Post WW2 recovery themes are just a few that I noticed. I could go on and on haha but I'm not sure how deep y'all wanna go on this. Anything else you guys wanna say? Good point on the other characters. That is another thing that I feel the movie was lacking. While Nausicaa herself is great, the others do lack. I think the whole lore with the giant things or whatever they were called wasn't talked about enough. I feel like there should have been a bit more on that, but I'm okay with what was there. I also watched in sub, when I had watched only dub previously. I really liked the sub to be honest, Nausicaa's seiyuu did a great job. The animation was really nice for how old the movie is, I was impressed when I looked up how old the movie was. |

Nausicaa was portrayed as a bit of messiah throughout the film, which does admittedly contribute to some of the others being a bit two-dimensional. They're really just there for convenience and to add another piece to the puzzle of her coming-of-age story. Kushana is the exception but because the focus wasn't on her, it wasn't developed much, and she too is mostly there to show how right Nausicaa is. If there were a few more moral dilemmas re Nausicaa's beliefs, it probably would have added a bit more depth to the film. She did briefly abandon her pacifism when she lashed out and killed those guys after her father was murdered. The struggle dealing with that and how her beliefs can clash with reality needed to be fleshed out a bit more. Trigun did that really well. Vash would cast a die and let someone live, that person would then go on to kill other people. He wasn't always in the right, and other characters told him that frequently. None of the other characters really challenged Nausicaa and what she believed in. I still love her and this film. Objectively I can see why the slightly more refined 'Princess Mononoke' could be considered the better of the two though. |

The points you bring up are very true. The basic rule of screenwriting (Not that Miyazaki even uses a screenplay) is that your protagonist must have conflict, growth, and then a resolution. Nausicaa doesn't really have that as you pointed out. Which almost seems like the people are the protagonist while Nausicaa is the main character. Which are two different things by the way for those that don't know. The people of the world are the ones growing. That's where the environmental and anti-war themes are manifesting themselves. Nausicaa is the vessel for change. It's a very interesting style of storytelling in that regard. |
