A rivalry originating mostly from Jurassic Park 3, I figured it'd be interesting to see the responses now that Jurassic World has come out. SIZE Rexy: 43 feet long, 17 feet tall Spino: 41-59 feet long, 13 feet high (not including sail) WEIGHT Rexy: 6.6-9 tonnes (14,550-19,841 pounds) Spino: 7-20.9 tonnes (15,432-46,076 pounds) Rexy is royalty, being the original Tyrannosaur from Jurassic Park, just 22 years older, which should make her bigger and stronger in Jurassic World. She's going up the Spinosaurus from Jurassic Park 3. My take is that the Rex from JP3 was a sub-adult male, so he was smaller than a fully grown adult female like Rexy, and the Spinosaurus had its hands full with him. Rexy was able to tango with the Indominus Rex for a bit before being overwhelmed by its strength (which is understandable as it was created to be bigger and better than the Rex). With Rexy being around the same size as the Spinosaur, and being a much bigger and stronger specimen, I think she'd definitely take home the victory, especially since from what we saw of her in JW, she goes right for the neck, which should be an insta-kill move. |

It hasn't had to actively hunt for its food for about 13 years of its life, true, but that doesn't make it a less dangerous creature. Less experienced in fighting large carnivores? Yes. Less lethal? I don't think that should result from her being essentially treated like a princess. She doesn't lose that instinct, as we've seen she's capable of surviving on her own (with no major competition, at least). Animals raised in captivity don't lose their instincts, even if it takes a bit of time to get them back to snuff. The JP games should be held as highly as the DBZ games, I'd say.
I wouldn't say the Spino has lots of experience fighting Tyrannosaurs. We only knew of three Rexes living on the island (which is logical with the size of the island and the amount of food and competition), and one of them was killed in JP3. Even if it had killed the other two previously, which I seriously doubt, then that wouldn't exactly equate to a lot of experience, especially since we don't know how those fights went. And honestly, re-watching the fight from JP3, the Spino didn't look like a pro at killing Rexes. It was on the defensive until the Rex stepped off and then seized the opportunity to grasp the Rex's wide open neck, and even then it took a moment of biting the neck before it performed the killing blow. If it was as experienced as you say, I would've expected a little better of a performance, but maybe that's just me. From what I saw, it seemed like an intelligent decision brought upon by opportunity, if we're assuming the Spino is more intelligent than the average dinosaur in the JP universe. The Indominous was still made out to be the most dangerous creation as of yet (even if that's only referring to its abilities). It took out an adult Ankylosaur after taking a club directly to the jaw by figuring out its weakness, though I don't necessarily want this to turn into that debate. It may be weak evidence, but there's also the blatant exhibition of Rexy smashing through the Spinosaur's skeleton upon arrival. I doubt they'd include that if the message wasn't to implicate who was back on top. I mean, "sorry your precious Rex got killed in the last one, Spino is still better but sorry nonetheless" doesn't make much sense when you watch the scene. What I got out of it was: "Okay, forget that scrub from JP3, this is the true Tyrannosaurus Rex." Edited by Pyrus, Jun 22 2015, 10:53 PM.

She survived on her own hunting dinosaurs who had also lived sedentary lives. No one on the island was really all that experienced, compared to the Spinosaurus, who was born and raised in a tough environment. She's never even seen a carnivore that's near her in size, it's no wonder the Indominus completely wrecked her
The fact that it seeks out T-rex scent is pretty decent evidence in its favor that it knows how to fight T-rexes. Furthermore, Billy mentioned Suchomimus or Baryonyx as candidates for the Spinosaur's identity due to being on InGen's list, so it's likely that there are those on the island as well. The point is that why would the Spinosaurus be attracted to T-rex pee if it couldn't reliably take one down?
Waiting for an opening is a fine strategy when being bitten on the neck and headbutted doesn't even wind you. It took 25 seconds to kill the T-rex, I'd say that's a pretty quick kill. This Spinosaurus was very tanky in the way it fought, basically letting the T-rex take some shots and then grabbing him while he was open
It was also supposed to be able to be taken down by the raptor pack. Winning over the Ankylosaur is also not a grand achievement because the Ankylosaur has never even seen a large carnivore and would be inexperienced in the nuances of battling them. Tanking the tail club is nice, smashing through a giant concrete and iron fence without even having its skin broken is a better feat.
That doesn't mean anything. Like, if the Apatosaurus smashes an Indominus statue in a sequel, that doesn't mean it would have won to it. |

Rexy breaking the spino skeleton was just a call back to the third movie, nothing more. People complained about the spino, so it was like a promise not to use any cool dinosaurs as actual plot-relevant characters again. It's no strength feat, and it doesn't serve as anything but blatant t-rex fanboying. |

I agree with most of this, but we still disagree on the Indominus fight. Rexy was able to go for a bit before she was overwhelmed once the Indominus began to use its arms (also not disagreeing that she would've been killed), and then she did most of the work again after Blue's distraction. The Indominus couldn't fight back at all; she was being dragged by the neck and shoulder tackled down the main street like a sack of potatoes, and this was the girl that shook off an RPG (though that wasn't a direct hit). How much of that was due to Blue is opinion, though, I suppose, but it looked to me (on my dark screen) that Blue was providing minor irritation at best while Rexy engaged full force. Knowing how to fight one and just being strong enough to beat one are two different things as far as I'm concerned. I'm not denying that Spino can take one down, but winning every single fight with a Rex no doubt? I don't agree with that. Baryonyx and Suchomimus were listed as being on "the list," but we're not given any indication that there were more Rexes on the island, though I suppose it's a possibility. It wasn't waiting for an opening or really tanking the Rex, though. It was actively trying to fight back, as it immediately tried to bite at the Rex's face after it got free of the neck grip and was using its arms as well, and then the opening presented itself after it was shoved back. If it was indeed waiting for an opening, I would think it would refrain from being offensive at all and either dodge or, as you mentioned, tank everything until the right moment. The raptor squad wasn't supposed to take down the Indominus. They were meant to lead the soldiers to it, who had the actual weapons to kill it. Owen: "We know that she is in sector 5. This is a game we call hide-and-seek. It's a scent drill, we've done it about a thousand times with these animals. When they get on target and they will get on target wait to engage. Velociraptors are pack hunters. They like to herd the animal into a kill zone. That's when we take our shot. Get a clear shot, wait on my command, and give her everything you got. We got one good target, gentlemen. Do not shoot my raptors...please." That's the exact dialogue from the scene for reference. As for the fence, it was how many years old and already had a hole in it in another place, so I wouldn't consider it at its peak strength. It may have been a deterrent to most of the dinosaurs (maybe those who had been around when it was active?), but I wouldn't say it's an amazing feat, at least not when the Spino right after couldn't get through the steel doors to the building leading down to the terrarium. I disagree on the notion that it means nothing. JP1 was symbolic with Rexy breaking the skeletons and essentially cementing her dominance, TLW was all about that Tyrannosaur exposure, and here we have Rexy smashing through a skeleton again and then later on roaring to declare she rules once more. It seems like the intent of the writers each time to show who's the real queen bee of the franchise. It's been blatant in each of those installments. But I admit it isn't necessarily the best evidence. I'm not sure how to take your tone here, whether you're legitimately annoyed by this or what. Edited by Pyrus, Jun 23 2015, 10:51 PM.

She bit the Indominus once before getting slashed in the face. From then on, it was pretty much a complete curbstomp where she was unable to do anything in return. Blue providing a distraction is a huge thing, it's kind of like if two fighters are squaring off and all of a sudden, a really mean cat decides to jump on the face of one. For obvious reasons, the guy getting attacked by the cat is going to have problems. Even after Blue interfered, Indominus had a second wind ready and was about to strike back before the Mosasaur got a kill steal
I meant that the Spinosaurus would have had run ins with Suchomimus and Baryonyx as well, other large carnivores(though the Baryonyx is a fair chunk smaller). I say it had to have run ins because the Spinosaurus in the movie is a belligerent monster that feels the need to chase down random humans across the island because they attacked it once. I get the feeling that any large predator near the Spinosaurus would be seen as a threat by the overly sensitive sailback.
It did tank the T-rex in the sense that it was pretty much undamaged by any of its attacks. And its about face after being shoved seemed skilled, that's really my end point
You're right, it was Hoskins who thought they could kill it and he'd stupid
The fence was 10 years old at max, more likely 9. And Spinosaurus busting through the giant fence without being scratched is a better feat than Indominus being impaled by random metal poles as it was dragged around. Spinosaurus being unable to burst through the door would be more so due to lack of space. It's too small to hip check or bullcharge it |

Spinosaurus was struggling with a teenage male T-Rex how is he going to fare with Rexy who is a fully grown female Rex. Also her being locked up isn't going to matter as she has instinct to fall back on. |

It took the whole of 25 seconds to kill the T-rex and was unharmed at the end of it. How is that struggling? His skin was completely unbroken by the end of the fight and he's chasing people down without limping later on. I think he'd fare rather well, given Rexy has no real feats other than getting absolutely wrecked by the Indominus. Everything else was either against a far smaller dinosaur or with Blue's help |

It doesn't matter if the fight was short considering 15 of those 25 seconds Spino was on the losing end of the fight. |

To be fair it managed to SURVIVE A T-REX BITE WITH NO HARM DONE. Like holy moly that is just plain silly. That spinosaurus should be used in the army not the i-rex. I totally understand why they smashed it in JW. That was not a dinosaur, it was some kind of juggernaut. |

Rexy didn't just bite the Indominus once. She got it by the neck first, the Indominus got out, she pushed it back a bit and got it by the neck again, after which the Indominus began using its arms to turn the tide and push her to the ground, which is an obvious disadvantage to a Tyrannosaur due to its undersized arms. Once the Indominus was pushed to the Mosasaur pool, after being rag-dolled by Rexy, you can see that the fight had begun to take its toll with it looking a bit dazed until it shook it off. I'm not saying it was exhausted, but it wasn't at 100% anymore, and I wouldn't expect it to be after being smashed around so much just before. Even with Blue's distraction, the Indominus shouldn't have been completely unable to fight back. It was a total one-sided beating after that, worse than the Indominus had dished out to Rexy earlier, though obviously lacking a just-about-to-be-killed moment. Granted, Rexy had it by the neck for most of the second round, but still. That's a fair point, though like you said, only the Suchomimus would really pose a threat to a creature that's 40+ feet long and weighs upwards of 9 tons. It's not like the Tyrannosaur wouldn't have experience fighting large predators either, given this is an Isla Sorna and not Isla Nublar T-Rex we're specifying here. The Buck from The Lost World had visible scars, likely from fighting either other Tyrannosaurs or other large predators (I'm inclined to say the latter, but who knows). In the same manner, the Tyrannosaur wasn't really damaged until obviously it was killed, so it leads me to believe the fight was too short or they weren't doing enough damage to each other. Hell, the Spinosaurus was the only one with blood on it and didn't do a thing to the T-Rex until the killing blow (it attempted to, but couldn't land a hit); the T-Rex was more or less in control until that point. I'll admit it's a bit impressive to walk away from that fight without a broken bone or anything, but the Tyrannosaur really only smashed into it once, and that looked like it was right on the quad or knee of the Spinosaur, so I don't know how much damage that would do. The Worker Village was built in 1980, and presumably that's when the fence was also built. Hurricane Clarissa struck Isla Sorna in 1995 according to a line from The Lord World's script (that didn't make the movie, so you're free to disregard it). Assuming the fence was maintained until that event, it would've been six years old. Either way, it wasn't in top condition and the Spinosaurus had a running start before breaking through it, as well as it didn't hit the top spiked railing and instead smashed right through the metal poles and mesh below, which would explain why it wouldn't have any visible markings on it; if it could survive tangoing with a T-Rex, I think a fence would be a lesser obstacle. I would expect it to be able to at least dent the door with its snout considering its previous feat, and it had a much longer running start. Edited by Pyrus, Jun 26 2015, 01:27 AM.

The Spinosaurus has long arms too, but unlike the Indominus, it knows how to do necksnapping holds with them. The Spinosaurus can tank some bites and then do what the Indominus did. No Blue to save Rexy though
Spinosaurus deliberately seeking out other large predators indicates he knows what to do. I give him the experience and skill edge over Rexy, for the fact that at best, she's deal with a Metricanthosaurus(not confirmed at all). Spinosaurus seeks out adult male T-rexes and takes down the sub-adult in 25 seconds
That's because the Spinosaur hadn't hit it. It got oneshotted once Spinosaurus grabbed him. Spinosaurus got bitten on the neck and was pretty much okay. Sure, it wasn't a full grown Rex, but the size difference isn't enough to make up for an almost perfect tank. |

That would hinge on Rexy leaving herself open like the sub-adult male did, which obviously neither of us can predict. From the fights we saw, Rexy is less of an offensive lineman than the sub-adult male, and instead goes after the neck and stays after it. The length of the fight isn't all that important when the content shows the Spinosaurus being on the losing end until the Tyrannosaur left itself open. The Rex was the only one to land a hit before the death blow, even though the Spinosaurus attempted to. If you took out the kill and only looked at the meat of the fight, it'd be hard to say the Spinosaurus was winning or would have won. Both competitors came to play, the Rex was in control (more or less), and then it got outsmarted. Of course it was one-shotted neck snapping tends to kill things, even dinosaurs. The same could've happened to the Spinosaurus. It survived the Rex's neck bite, which is complete s*** in and of itself, but we never saw what would've happened had the Spinosaurus not used its arms, which the Rex doesn't have the luxury of. It wasn't like it was dying just by being in the Spinosaurus' maw. It was the added aid of the arms that led to the neck snapping and kill. Edited by Pyrus, Jun 26 2015, 06:06 AM.

Rexy did lose to I-Rex and was about to be dead if it wasn't for Blue the raptor. And seeing how Rexy still couldn't finish the job with assistance from Blue makes me want to side with Spino who pretty much handled a T-rex before and showed a bit of intelligence. |

Rexy was wearing the Indominus down. The fight wasn't over. And like I said, the Spinosaurus wasn't majorly impressive fighting the T-Rex in JP3. It's one and only connected hit was the kill shot. |
