When they remade the first six Final Fantasy games, they kept the turn based combat. Granted it was probably due to 2D limitations but it also shows that they're willing to stick with the tried and tested.

I really hope they do because I am not a fan of FF15's battle system to the extent that I probably won't buy that game.

There is another potential issue for me. In Final Fantasy Zero when you move the camera, it blurs the screen until you stop. I do not want to see that s*** in this remake. It is far too nauseating.
It could work, but they may try and find a balance between old and new. Nothing shows the complexity of technology today like free-flowing, real-time action-based RPG battles and, while I know it wouldn't be for everyone, I think it'd be a really interesting take on FFVII. A modern, heavily improved ATB system would be awesome too. So many different things that they could do but, again, they're going to receive a hefty amount of criticism whichever route they take.

I agree with the blur effect in Type-0. I see what they were going for, but it didn't have the desired effect and was a real damper on the already poor visuals (PSP HD port ftw.)

I also have a strong feeling that the Xbox One isn't going to get it. The fact that Square Enix haven't even hinted or indicated that the PC port of FFVII is coming to the Xbox One is a big tell, imo.
They are getting it, at least PC most likely is. When it was announced they said "coming first to PS4"

If they do go for a third person action game type battle system I'll forgive them if they make battles with the Weapons and such absolutely epic.
Like no run up and slash at their feet kinda lameness, jump all over them and hit weakpoints kind of epicness.

Games with battle systems like that just aren't hard if they make it challenging I won't mind so much.

Maybe they could let you select targets and kind of auto attack like a turn based system but if you auto attack there's a chance enemies can block or counter you, so there's the skill requiring option of doing it yourself and pressing buttons to dodge hits.
That would be awesome.

I wonder what the Ruby and Emerald weapons will be like? I still haven't defeated them in the original, I hope they're just as hard but don't basically require cheating to win, the whole lucky 7's thing is super lame.

I can see it being one of the greatest games of all time or a massive fail, nothing in between.

'Coming first to PS4' means that it could come to PC and not the Xbox One. I would've thought that Square Enix would have at least announced that they were brining the PC port to the Xbox One if they hoped to release it on that platform.

I highly doubt SE are just going to abandon Microsoft like that when they've got the exclusivity deal for Tomb Raider going, that would be kinda stupid really.

Not to mention other Final Fantasy games have been coming to Xbox for a long time now.

SE aren't really that loyal to Sony, if it was Square Soft still then maybe but SE will go where the money is which is on all systems most likely.

Watching a summary of Microsoft's conference and it is really really weird how they embraced PC so much "This game is exclusive to Xbox and a much more powerful platform" was in practically every reveal...

They're creating less and less reasons to own an Xbox and there was no mention of Kinect at all, people laugh at Sony for the Vita and yeah...where's the Kinect?
Fairly odd for them to just abandon a technology so exclusive to the X1 at least with the Vita it's just a handheld not something initially crucial to the PS4.

It almost seems certain that they're just going to make an "Xbox PC" next gen instead and abandon what's there now.

Again, questioning why Square Enix haven't indicated any interest at all in bring any version of FFVII to Microsoft consoles. Square Enix have had a close relationship with Sony when it comes to older titles; compare the PSN to XLM and notice the abundance of FF games on the former when compared with the latter. iOS of all things is getting FFVII, so the 360/X1 showing no sign whatsoever of getting it is quite weird.

Square Enix wouldn't be abandoning Microsoft. It would be one game that Sony would likely pay out the *** to keep on their console and PC. FFXV is still coming to X1, and so is Kingdom Hearts, so Sony keeping FFVIIR for themselves (and PC) wouldn't be that surprising, honestly. Especially considering the exclusive nature of the original.

Well, that's pretty much exactly the same as how Bethesda announced mod support for the X1 version of Fallout 4 in Microsoft's conference but not their own or Sony's, even though it's going to PS4 some time after.

It's just part of the exclusivity deals with both these things.

It'd be dumb of SE to do because everyone over at Xbox would lose faith in them plus they'll want Xbox users to experience the greatness that is FFVII for the first time.

If I was an Xbox user and SE just ditched us like that I wouldn't bother getting FFXV, who knows if they'd give us FFXVI or whatever else they make...

As for iOS pretty sure most of the old FF's have been put on it so no reason not to keep going. With Xbox not much reason to put VII on it when they can just put the remake up instead, assuming everyone with an Xbox has never ever used a PlayStation they have no real reason to be interested in such an old game.

Anyone getting The Division? I was interested but now I hear talk of "legendary weapons/loot"

So it's basically going to be another looter shooter like Destiny where you just grind for new weapons, level up and then grind for more...yay.

No, bringing the original FFVII to the X1 would be a good way of gauging interest. They wont simply think ''People who haven't experienced FFVII will definitely buy it.'' If they release it on X1 and it sells well, they can get onto Square Enix's case about how long exclusivity is going to last. What if it's six months? A year? They can't very well sit on their laurels and seriously think that it's going to sell very well on their console without even checking whether the majority of their user-base would actually want to buy it or not. Right now, they've got to be on full damage control mode. FFVIIR is likely going to bring a ton of people to the new generation, and if they have to wait a year to play it on X1, which console are they likely going to go with?

Furthermore, Square Enix probably haven't fully decided on which platforms to release it yet. Sony jumped on it and ensured that it'd be releasing on PS4, but Square Enix's silence on the matter when it comes to whether it's releasing on other platforms or not is interesting. Surely, if they knew it was coming out on both PC and Xbox One, they'd announce it at their own conference or, at the very least, outside of E3. Withholding that information is only making people less hesitant and will eventually make them disinterested in the game.

Playstation is the company for JRPGs. IIRC, XIII sold about 2.5x more PS3 copies than the 360. It gets worse, with Lightning returns eventually selling almost 5x more copies on PS3 than 360.

Microsoft have to prove that there's a strong desire for JRPGs on their consoles. Otherwise, Sony could just end up paying SE more to keep it as a PS4 exclusive.

I don't think so really not a lot of people are a fan of old games like that unless they bring some kind of nostalgia to them. FFVII is "lame" and "has horrible graphics"

Xbox fans aren't used to that from FF, discounting XI the first proper FF they've had is XIII which had pretty dazzling graphics at the time.
It's basically like the story with MGS probably won't be seeing MGS1 on Xbox any time soon even though the later games are on it.

For Xbox they'll want it to be new and interesting and for PS evoke major nostalgia feels.

Also with those sales you have to take in to account that the Japanese don't care much for Xbox barely anyone over there would have got XIII on 360 vs their home system.

VII being hailed as one of the greatest if not the greatest game ever is more than enough to get people interested in an updated version, especially with hype for XV.

And when it comes to money there is no way they can keep it from Microsoft they bought them out for Tomb Raider and could easily pay for an X1 version of VIIR.

It'd be interesting to see how many people who currently own an Xbox One have owned a PS1/PS2 in the past. There's potentially a huge market for nostalgia with FFVII there, but how are Microsoft going to find out? They can't just assume that people will 'buy it because it's FFVII'; the consumers would have to be interested in buying and playing an RPG. What better way to find that out than releasing JRPGs? It's too late for FFXV and KH3; they wont be released in time. If XV was releasing this year and had amazing sales, they'd know that there's a strong market for that type of game. Right now, there's nothing like that. Microsoft and Square Enix simply don't know whether the market is there or not, and that hesitance could be enough for them to stick with Sony and PC instead of taking a huge risk.

Tomb Raider is a completely different story. Sony would pay an immense amount of money to keep something as big as FFVIIR on their console.

FFVIIR >>>>>>>> RotTR.

As for the last bit I doubt they would if it'd make them have severe losses from it Tomb Raider isn't so bad since it's not as popular so they can deal with that.

Doubt they could deal with as big a loss in both money and respect if Microsoft got an exclusivity but it's doubtful they could completely keep them away.

I'd imagine the deal was something akin to "Put it on PS4 first or we just won't sell it" rather than them paying money, SE isn't daft enough to think it won't sell better on PS4 but it'll still sell on X1.

Anyway we can speculate as much as we want but we'll know sooner or later :p

Worst reveal of the event? Probably that Metroid game for me. I'd imagine most fans of Metroid were just insulted by that. Metroid football, wut.

Is it only me or does FFVII seem like a complete copout? Sure, a remake is cool and all, but have the Final Fantasy franchise failed so hard that they now have to remake old classics? Thank god it's not FFIX I say.

You could characterize it that way if there hadn't been hordes of people begging for it. It'll be a huge seller and it gets them a lot of goodwill from the fanbase; they'd be stupid not to.
I love building PCs. If you have any questions about it feel free to ask. I can help you with almost any kind of PC you'd want to build.

Chances are that Sony paid them a lot to do it.

http://www.siliconera.com/2015/06/19/why-square-enix-decided-to-finally-make-the-final-fantasy-vii-remake/

Nomura states that one of the big reasons that SE are remaking it is to boost PS4 sales in Japan particularly. Increasing the install base comes with the added benefit of having more people buying your games on that platform, so it's a win-win for both SE and Sony.

They've been considering it for a while now, and have always been on-and-off about it, so it was going to happen at some point. Better to do it now, while the new generation is still fairly young, than potentially wait another 5 years, when the people who originally worked on it may not be interested.

They've been remaking Final Fantasy games for a while. I remember playing a remake of FF3 on DS.
