This is something i've always been wondering about, more specifically in the Sensui Arc and Three King Arc where it becomes really weird. How is it that the characters in the series got so strong (or were strong already) in between the Dark Tournament Arc to the Sensui Arc and then again in between the Sensui Arc to the Three Kings Arc? Lets use Hiei for an example. In the Dark Tournament Arc, he wasn't anywhere near Tougro's level; being around the same level as like a C or even D-class demon and when the Sensui Arc rolled around, he was casually destroying B-class demons that were around the same level as Toguro was. Sensui was also stated to be as strong as a S-class demon (or maybe even stronger) and is capable of pretty much tearing through 1000's of Toguro's at once. Are we to just assume that Togashi was even more nonchalant about his powerscalling than Toriyama was for DBZ? |

What were the time spans in between? I'm not familiar with YYH past the Dark Tournament, so I have no idea how long each future arc was or what kind of training went on. |

I don't know. I think I remember a comment that when Hiei became one with the Dragon of Eternal Flame during his fight with Bui that he was strong enough to take Tougro on. But it wasn't until he became one with the Dragon though. Prior to that he was nowhere near that level. It's been a year since I've watched it. I may have to go through it again to be 100% sure. |

Powers in Togashi manga (I say that because this applies to Hunter X Hunter as well) can become stronger based solely on your resolves and willpower. Hiei and Kurama have abilities that can potentially make them very strong, at pretty much any time (Yoko form for Kurama, Jagan Eye for Hiei), hence why, twice, characters got themselves killed/presumed dead for effectively no reason. Resolve literally powers you up. Everyone likely trained between the Dark Tournament and Chapter Black arcs too, definitely for the Three Kings arc. |

The three main characters went through about a year of intensive training in the demon realm. It was probably similar to the ROSAT training in dbz. Plus Yusuke had unlocked his demonkin thing against Sensui which raised him from A class to S class on it's own. You might also look at the preperation for the Saiyans in dbz. Characters like Tien and Yamcha went from being weaker than King Picollo to being stronger than Radditz in the space of a year. I think it's closer to the ROSAT training in terms of scaling though. |
