Why do people believe in faith healers?

Crazy Awesome Legend

Why do so many people believe that they can be healed by these blatant frauds and lunatics? Surely it must ring alarm bells about their authenticity when they send people around with collection pots? I mean, why would someone supposedly doing the lord's work need collection pots? Are they paying God a fee to be able to use these "healing powers"?

Why don't they just walk through hospitals healing everyone? Where were they during the recent Ebola outbreak?

If people just stopped and thought for five seconds...

And it makes me sick that these frauds are exploiting obviously vulnerable people for money. They should all be in jail.

Leve Feyenoord 1!

You will believe anything if your child is sick.
People just follow others. I mean, if other people stick with it surely it must work right?
Thats not me asking that question, thats people in general using flawed logic.
People are religious, they think god can perform miracles, if paying a fee gets god to perform a miracle surely they'll pay it.
It's a mix of desperation and blind faith.
This is also where the convenience of religion comes back, because if you die, you just didnt pray hard enough.

It's a nice fantasy. Like, how cool would it be if we actually lived in a world where if you prayed to a deity hard enough you got special powers!? I'd be down. I want to fly. Wait. No. I want immortality. Wait no. Umm... can I have three wishes instead?

People believe it because it's a wonderful lie. We all believe in lies or have believed in a lie before. Why are you surprised that someone believed in this lie?

They've done studies on this and have showed a few things.
1. that the placebo effect is pretty useful to the human mind, and the bodies ability to fight minor diseases
2. that major diseases are not effected after prayer, etc

Quote:

And patients who knew they were being prayed for had a higher rate of post-operative complications like abnormal heart rhythms, perhaps because of the expectations the prayers created, the researchers suggested.

Any successes that the Religious gain by praying for a patient, is simply luck and logical fallacy of "The Texas Sharpshooter". At the end of the last topic, a believer suggests that he knows that prayer works, and that he has seen successes. This is using the above fallacy to the fullest potential. He is simply cherry-picking data to promote the usefulness of prayer, even if his success rate may be 2 out of 100 healed.

It truly was a Shawshank redemption

People like to believe that we live in a world where magic and miracles can happen. You only have to look at religion, faith healers, fortune tellers, people claiming they speak to the dead, people claiming that they have a sixth sense for certain things etc. We seem to crave a world where that stuff can happen.

"Next time?"
"Course. Doing better next time. That's what life is."
