Baltimore police are struggling to contain a wave of violent crime that erupted in the city last month in Wake of Freddie Gray’s Death, Baltimore Sees Reco

May marked Baltimore’s deadliest month in more than 40 years as three men were fatally shot yesterday, bringing the month’s homicide toll to 43.

The Baltimore Sun reported the two separate shootings Sunday—the first killing two men after they were fatally shot in the head, the second killing one man and leaving another injured after both were shot in the back. Both shootings occurred in East Baltimore.

Baltimore has not seen this level of homicides in the span of a month since August 1972, when 45 people were murdered, and December 1971, when 44 were killed.

In addition to the 43 fatally shot in May, more than 100 people were injured by gunfire.

A difference today is the steep drop in population since the 1970s when the city had more than 900,000 residents. Today, Baltimore’s population sits at about 600,000.

Peter Moskos, a former Baltimore police officer and assistant professor at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice, wrote that given this population drop, May is the deadliest month Baltimore has ever seen based on the per-capita homicide rate.

The jump in homicides follows the death of Freddie Gray, which ignited a slew of riots in April and led to increased scrutiny of the Baltimore Police Department. Some point to the aftermath of Gray’s death as reason for the uptick in violence.

“Following a period of civil unrest, we have been experiencing an increase of the pace of violent crime, most notably in homicide shootings,” Baltimore Police Commissioner Anthony Batts wrote in a letter to community leaders, according to USA Today.

Why do people commit crimes to show that a mad is innocent? Killing each other and destroying your city is not helping the case. Kinda glad I moved away from there.

I've only heard stories about Riots from my Father when he was a police officer in Houston Texas. He always thought the people rioting were dumb. They were destroying property and businesses that they frequently use and then expect the government to cover the costs of any damage done. He's seen people set entire streets on fire.

It baffles me.

Baltimore, MD has a terribly high murder rate. If you have seen The Wire, you'll realize, that the show isn't all that fictional. I live in a state where the total number of murders for the year is less than the amount of murders Baltimore has had in 6 months.

The type of issues that exist in Baltimore are (dare I say) beyond what traditional police can deter. Only so much can be done within the confounds of the law and its not going to cut it for what Baltimore has going on.

Crazy Awesome Legend

I live in a city of about 280,000 people and we only get about two murders a year. I think that's really impressive considering England and Wales had a total of 537 in 2014.

Some of that is due to racism involved in Baltimore police work. Lots of wrong stop and fritz going on there.

Actually Baltimore is very pro police and it's not really a race issue no matter how hard the media try to display it as. It's a police brutality issue however. Alot of these cops are White, Black, and Hispanic so it's distributed equally.
