McDonald's works should make $15 per hour?!

I'm sick of seeing this all over Facebook. I know that fast food workers went on a strike for 15 dollars a while back, but that definitely doesn't represent the majority of people fighting for a higher minimum wage.

I just love it when conservatives use this as an example of how stupid people are for fighting for a higher minimum wage. Like... it's such a horrible example. The minimum wage in the state of Oklahoma is still $7.25 per hour. That's not even enough to afford the cheapest one bedroom apartments where I live, and that is not okay. Not everyone has the money or the means to go to college.

I'm all for raising the minimum wage to 9 or 10 dollars an hour across every state in America.

Thoughts?

I know this is old news, but it's still a craze on facebook for some reason. It annoys me to no end.

EDIT: Typo in the title. Sorry gais. I was just so excited.

I do think it should be illegal to not allow people to thrive off of their work. Minimum wage should be minimum for living decently, not barely living at all

It's already the equivalent of almost ten dollars here. $9.94 to be precise. Even with benefits, it's still not really enough to live on.

They have to be very careful when increasing minimum wage. If they raise it too high then the prices of everything go up with it and it becomes a waste of time. I think that 12 dollars is enough, otherwise you risk doing that.

$15ph is too high. Where are they even getting that damn number from?

I know teachers that make less than that and they have University degrees, plus a certification...

15 an hour is bellow minimum wage for an adult in Australia. For a high school student under 17 years old 15 an hour is fine, but if you're looking to start any kind of a life 15 an hour is a major joke! I wouldn't even get out of bed for anything less than 25 an hour. Anything under 200 a day isn't worth working for. Don't even care what line of work you're in, it's just a joke.

Alternatively, people who suffer from minimum wage woes should look for a new job! There's plenty of work out there, and there's plenty of money for those who are hungry enough to earn it! Never settle for minimum wage, always push for more!

I'm on the train of if you don't want minimum wage, don't have minimum skills. Working at McDonalds should not pay you a living wage. The job I work does not require any previous experience (Although it helps) and pays $12 an hour. You just have to look for jobs that pay better.

In fact, in my area the Casinos is the best place to get a good job at. Sure the hours are wonky since they're open 24/7 but the pay is fantastic.

If that's not enough we have several ship yards that pay and train you for welding which gives you experience as a welder for ANY welding job and the pay is fantastic.

Then of course there's the military. Good living wages, free housing, benefits, etc. Not to mention the traveling (which can be seen as a pro or a con).

If you're working for a major corporation at a base entry level job you don't deserve to make more money than people who work higher skilled jobs. Acquire experience, skills and knowledge and get a job that will pay you to use those. I get bonus hours because I know how to do basic troubleshooting for televisions, cable boxes, dvr players and fix wifi issues with modems and routers. If I didn't have this knowledge the company I work for would hire someone else to do it. I'd still have my job, but that would be 10-12 hours I'd lose out on a week.

I realize the Casinos and Ship Yard job doesn't apply to every area. In fact, it likely only applies to my area. But still. Find companies that will pay you well, train you and pay you during training. They exist. There is likely one in every city. Yes. The work is hard. But I hope people don't honestly expect to get paid well for doing easy work.

Yes. Working for McDonalds, Wal Mart, Best Buy, Sears and any other base level corporation job is easy.

What is the point of having a job if it doesn't pay a living wage? Isn't the whole reason for working to put food in your belly?

Or get involved in a trade! Good money out there for trades people and small business opportunities out the wazoo!

I work two jobs! I work most days a week and some weekends as a general builder and i work one day a week in a high school as a youth worker. The money is fantastic in the building game! And I'm seeing more and more women doing it too! Female carpenters, painters, etc. There's nothing but opportunity in building. I'll peach it to the choir if I have to.

I think you're right in the sense that if you don't want minimum wage, then look elsewhere. Get trained up and do what you have to do. Your future doesn't just present it self to you, you gotta make it happen through hard work and lots of sacrifice.

On the flip side, working fast food is difficult work! You gotta be fast and you can't slow down. It's easily worth more than minimum wage, especially since these chains are a multi billion dollar industry. Give the workers a better cut, they're nothing with out the people what work for dog money throw them a bone!

I haven't been able to find a job in my area that pays more than $11 per hour and doesn't require either a university degree or 3+ years experience in said field.

Not to be rude or anything, but I disagree with your examples coming from Australia. It's a bit different here.
When I was 17, I was super excited to be making $7. When I was in University at 23, I was lucky to be making $7.50. I looked for a job all over that damn town. Must have put in at least 200 applications. McDonalds wouldn't even hire me. No experience working with food. Got a job where I had experience in retail instead.

I make almost triple that now, but the important part is, I didn't expect more because I was grateful to actually have something. Getting a job over here is a f***ing joke. Since I've graduated, i've put in over 400 applications to various places. Probably about 30 applications to IBM alone.
I've had at most 15 interviews. The numbers don't add up do they?

Because a lot of these jobs are aimed at hiring 16 year olds who depend on their parents but want some extra spending cash. They're not designed for someone in the mid 20's to be supporting their partner and child off of. That or you were expected to make it out of base level positions into higher paying ones that come with benefits like monthly bonuses which is a way for a company to pay you more with it also being a tax write off for them.

Our currency works in different ways to you. Though your dollar is worth more than ours, the cost of living is more expensive here than where you are. So in relative terms your minimum wage is the same as ours, it's just your dollar is greater and your cost of living is less than ours. If I were living in America, I wouldn't settle for anything less than 17 an hour.

Edit: mind you, I'm a trained professional! I'm worth the minimum amount I'm asking (hate to sound arrogant, but it's true)

What most of these minimum wage supporters fail to realize is that the people who need/want these jobs the most (namely minorities, teens, and unskilled workers) end up getting shafted by wage increases. With a lower minimum wage, fewer people apply to "menial" jobs, meaning employers can't be as picky about who they hire - it's basically "take this kid or miss out on an opportunity to make more money." People willing to work low/minimum wage jobs usually have no other options, so it's a blessing for them that even though they're not making much, they're still making some.

Now, when the minimum wage is increased, especially to some unfathomably idiotic amount like 15 f***ing dollars an hour, everyone and their uncle wants to work at McDonalds. More people apply, meaning that employers have a larger pool of candidates to choose from - it goes from just "people with no other options" to "anyone who wants easy money whether they have other options or not." It should therefore come as no surprise to anyone that the largest supporters of minimum wage increases are racist white men, who only hire minorities because they're the only ones who apply; once they have enough "desirable" applicants, they no longer have to hire the people who actually need to work there.

Additionally, the employees who are only productive enough to keep at the lower minimum wage end up losing their jobs because when the minimum wage is increased, they cause the business lose money. For example, if employers have to pay $8 an hour to an employee who brings to the company a value of $9 an hour, the employer makes $1 an hour and has no reason to let go of the worker. If, however, the minimum wage is increased to $10 an hour, that employee ends up costing the company $1 an hour and any business owner with a brain would sack his/her a***. That employee then goes from making $8 an hour to $0 an hour. Not only that, but when the minimum wage is increased, companies that are already just scraping by may have to close entirely, which means that all the workers there also go from $X an hour to $0 an hour.

Like Faylen said, minimum wage jobs aren't meant to support a family on. They're for kids who need some extra cash to spend on dates or whatever or to help support their families. If you see an adult working at a fast-food place, they're generally not there as a career choice - they're there because they have no other applicable skills and no other place will hire them. Forcing companies to pay them more than they're worth is simply asinine, and even though supporters of wage increases may have good intentions, those good intentions usually do a hell of a lot more harm than good.

I just had a conversation about this earlier today, and I think minimum wage ought to be enough to support the person holding that job. That is the purpose of having a minimum wage. Anyone should be able to live off minimum wage. It's just wrong for an employer to pay a wage below this kind of threshold.

But what fraction of these employees are actually 16-years-old dependents?

I heard that raising minimum wage up to a livable wage will have a negligible effect on the economy. I don't have a source for this yet -- I heard this from a very smart and well-informed friend (who claimed to have a source), but I'll look for a source later.
