I want to start a new game on Football Manager 15 as a local non league team named Plymouth Parkway. Now I'm pretty good with tactics so I don't need much help on that front but when it comes to the buying and selling of players, that's where I struggle. Not so much with the buying but with the selling. I find it really hard to tell who to sell and who to keep. And is it a good idea to get random free transfers and then immediately sell them?

Any advice is welcome.

If in doubt, ask your staff. They can come with good advice. Otherwise look at the star system.

All right, set up a new game as Elburton Villa not Plymouth Parkway. They are the inferior non league side in the area so I thought it might be more of a challenge. Gonna start a Lets Play series of it from tomorrow. Feel free to offer feedback in the Youtube comments section.

A Let's Play series of Football Manager? Uhh... I'm not sure I'm interested in that, haven't been in the past.

The way I'll do it is I'll show one game per episode. Plus I'll talk about who I've signed and who I've let go. However most of the game will be played off camera. I mean, of course no one wants to watch my pre season in the tenth division or me reading reports.

One game per episode sounds really, really, long and I'm not sure how many people are into that, but you might find an audience, so good luck.

My experience of football games dates back to the days when Championship Manager was the king of all management sims out there, now it's dead, but that is not a story for today. When you take on a lower team, to see how far you can get, selling players will be hard because, they are terrible and no one wants them. Best chances tend to be trying to loan them out and getting the other team to pay the wage. Terrible players you don't want around, you need to work out if sacking them works out cheaper than keeping them, are they a drain on wages and all that.

First season or two, work with what you have got, some might end up getting interest from clubs in those years, use some cheap tactics that exploit mechanics of the game, CM used to favour teams with Defencive Midfielders for example, but you said tactics is fine.

It's one game per episode but I would be playing more off camera and then briefly summarising my progress at the beginning of each episode.

So I start by talking about new ins and outs, then I show my progress in the league and then I finish with a game. It's an efficient way of cutting out a lot of the boring bulls*** in between matches plus it means that I won't be doing 47 episodes per season.

In the tenth tier it looks as though I don't have to worry about player wages since they're all amateur.

And there is definitely an audience for this sort of thing hence why I'm doing it. This Youtuber did a series where he took a team named Lewes FC up to the premier league from the 7th tier and he got thousands of views. Granted he's much more experienced than me and a much better player. But it didn't look as impossible as I once thought.

It truly was a Shawshank redemption

For lower league teams, your best bet is to search through the numerous free agents. Very tedious, but you can find some gems. Also, look at the players in the Transfer List that are rated around £10k or less (sometimes more) and you can usually offer £0 for them and the offer is accepted. Loans can help too, although obviously they're not great for long-term planning.

When looking at players, you have to really narrow your expectations. So for example, when looking for a CB, only look at one or two stats (Tackling, Heading), rather than trying to find a really quality player. That'll usually be enough for the lower leagues. Pace can be important for attacking players, since a lot of lower league teams usually lack it.

I used to play manager games a lot. I started to lose interest when they became too complicated. Nowadays they seem to need more and more attention, adjusting tactics for every single game (and more often than not in game too).

I'll try and check out your Let's Play, could be interesting. Good luck!

I've been doing exactly that during pre season. I literally have no transfer or wage budget so I have no choice but to take free transfers. And yes I found some quality players but I still need to strengthen my squad more. I think I only have six subs right now with only one pre season match left to go. Not ideal.

Have you got a parent club? You can usually get loaned players without even having to pay their wages from a parent club.

If I did have one then I'd imagine it's Plymouth. That's definitely something worth checking out. Although even for the tenth tier Plymouth's reserves and under 21s aren't much to shout about. Hence how I beat them 3-2 in a friendly last night.
