Greetings. I will be your waifu this season.

So in past wars, namely the world wars, do you think people signed up because they felt it was their duty to protect the country or that they were just...not to speak ill of the dead but stupid enough to think that they wouldn't get killed?

I suppose propaganda would probably aid in making it seem like they have a great chance of success too there was tons about how stupid the Germans and Japanese were even though obviously that wasn't true.

So on all sides did they feel it was their honourable duty to join or did they join because they felt they had to and that there was no reason to worry about getting killed before even firing a shot?

Obviously we can't really know but what do you think?

I'm not sure.
Afterwards I'm sure the winners at least felt proud for what they did but initially hardly anyone would have been prepared for what war is, their heads filled with images of them mowing down hundreds of enemies like it was nothing like they're the superhero in a story.

No

everything you've mentioned are legitimate reasons and there isn't just one reason why everyone would sign up. some may have been seeking glory, others wanted to defend their country, some may have had nothing else to do, and others may have had a friend or family member who were out fighting and they wanted to make sure their loved ones returned home safely, and the list goes on.

Reasons differ for each person.
Mostly propaganda though I think.

also, your last sentence is false. Winners do not always feel proud.
Look at WWI for example. Look at how proud British forces were at the beginning and then after the war look at how negative the soldiers spoke of the war, of how pointless it was. Even though they won. Take the famous poem Dulce et decorum est from Wilfred Owen, he was in the war himself.

I meant more that losers probably didn't feel proud of what they did, given that they failed.
