My Dear Melancholy,

Just wondering after a chat. Why calling someone by their first name is consider disrespectful? Like if I introduce myself. I'll say I'm Tinesha. In future jobs of course I'll present myself as Tinesha A. Day but that's different right? It's kinda weird when I see.. Asians (Korean, Japanese, Mandarin, Chinese, and Taiwanese specifically) kids introduce themselves by last name and call each other by last names unless they're friends.

I hope I'm not being ignorant on the subject. It's just weird I guess. I can understand teachers, certain jobs (my current job is a 1st name), and elders. I just don't get calling someone by last name. "Hey Day how are you doing?" vs "Hey Tinesha how are you doing?".

Since we're on a Dragonball Z forum I'll bring up Akira Toriyama. Every interview I see, it refers him as Toriyama. On kanzenshuu I see everyone calling him Toriyama but here it's Akira. I just don't understand it...How is calling someone by their first name rude?

Once again sorry if I'm being stupid about it. Or if I got some culture things wrong. I don't mean to. I'm legit curious after seeing it first hand.

Crazy Awesome Legend

I have no idea where it came from. Second names have only been around for a few hundred years. Before that it was just like John the farmer, Michael the wise. Things like that.

Personally I prefer it if people refer to me as Mr Bailey. However since I'm aware that's weird I just role with whatever they want to call me.

I also prefer to name people as Mr, Mrs and and Miss. First names seem too personal to me.

It's definitely old fashioned since I see it a lot on old tv shows. Everyone's referring to each other as Mr and Mrs.

The family name is more important than the given name. That's how it is in their culture, there isn't really a reason why we use first names over last names and they don't. Cultural differences.

We call people all sorts of s*** in New Zealand lol.

"Bro" "Mate" "Bruh" etc.

Also nicknames out the a***. You'll be lucky to ever be called your first name to be honest, let alone your last.

It truly was a Shawshank redemption

The naming conventions are different in the East. Whereas here in the West the order of the name is generally 'Given Name-Family Name' e.g. John Smith, in many Eastern countries it's reversed, with the family name coming first e.g. Smith John. So in Japan, 'Akira Toriyama' would instead be 'Toriyama Akira'. So calling him 'Toriyama' is technically calling him by his 'first' name (although that is still his family name). The given name (Akira) would only be used informally e.g. outside of work, among friends (and even then, it isn't really used on it's own, I think it's usually followed by '-san', which I think is a term of respect).

I can see why in their culture using someone's given name could be seen as disrespectful. A given name is your personal name, and to use it outright is almost like skipping formalities and assuming you and that person are friends. That behaviour just seems strange to us because in our culture given names aren't really seen as personal, it's just how we identify ourselves. There are some aspects of it in our culture though. Like you mentioned, in job interviews you are more often than not referred to as 'Mr/Miss/Mrs Family Name', and on letters we are usually referred to in the same way. Also when a business calls looking for you, they ask for you using that same method. There are still examples of given names being excluded because it is informal to use them, it's just in many Eastern cultures formalities extend into a bigger pool of your life.

My Dear Melancholy,

Well it's only 66% accurate. Not my real last name and not the correct spelling for my first name.
