Gero was unable to fully tank Goku's punch. Vegeta knocked 19 away easily and then pretty much fully tanked 19's punch. also both, Vegeta and Goku had a pretty big lead over piccolo before they started training. Why does he get super magic gains when it wasn't even plot required?

In fact, his importance was arguably greater than Trunks's during the Android arc since he actually fought and damaged one of the cyborgs. He was Goku's primary backup when first encountering #19 and #20. Plus, when Goku was incapacitated, the Z warriors looked to Piccolo as the defacto leader of the group instead of Vegeta. I would certainly say that his presence carried weight. Humongous power gains are nothing new for non-Saiyan cast members. The humans went from being inferior to Kami to easily disposing of Raditz-tier opponents using the same training methods that barely put Goku above 300 back in Dragonball. Just imagine how much benefit training with a Super Saiyan would give someone. Piccolo definitely knew. Hell! I could see Krillin and Yamcha pushing upwards to the tens of millions if they had taken Goku up on his offer to train with him, Gohan, and Piccolo. Back to the question - I have Piccolo somewhere between 60-70% of SSJ Vegeta at this. So if for example Vegeta were at 300,000,000 against the cyborgs, Piccolo would rank at 180-210,000,000. Trunks could be anywhere from 70-80% of his father and still be superior to Piccolo. I'm leaning more towards Piccolo being 60% of Vegeta and Trunks being at 70% as AvatarReiko put it.

In the manga piccolo and Gohan spend their time training vs ssj Goku unlike in the anime. It still allows Gohan to be a 5.5, Krilin a 5, Tien a 3, and Yamcha a 2 with Chaozu a 0.5

Wherever Piccolo is, there is no need for him to be "respected". Goku trained with him during he gap, he already knows what Piccolo is capable of. Vegeta doesn't respect anyone but himself at that point in time. Why would they respect him?

Why would he be shown respect? umm maybe be because he bust his a*** to be = to a ssj. lets not forget he didnt even used gravity training yet he still 60 or 70% of vegeta max ssj. now he did this with out a transformation. and we can all agree piccolo is over vegeta base.

Chapter: 383 (DBZ 189), P3.1 Context: after Cell defeats Kuririn Vegeta: “Are you happy to harass a piece of garbage like that? Just like I thought, even after reaching your perfect form you still don’t seem like anything special.” I doubt he can be much more than 10% over initial Perfect Cell.
