I always assumed 17 was a little stronger, but is there any evidence for either of these being stronger than the other? |

I’m Android No.17, the strongest in history…” He says this earlier aswell and 18 doesn't deny it. That's all we have to go on and all we really need. He's stronger. |

I was actually going to make a thread exactly like this, but I'm glad it's been already made, yay!  It is fact that #17 is stronger than #18, not necessarily because #17 says so because who can take him seriously when he's constantly shouting he's the strongest in the universe with #16 - a much stronger android - right behind him. Just like 16 never denied it, I would assume from their personalities alone 18 wouldn't do it either because they've always let 17 have his way with things and be the leader since he's childish and clearly the cockiest out of the group, so there would be little point in arguing with him. We know #17 is stronger than #18 because of an official DBZ article where Toriyama reveals that after building #17, Dr. Gero realized he had given him too much power and decided to reduce the power in his next model, who we know was #18, in order to control it better. I'm sure someone can post the scan of that article as it's on the internet and shouldn't be too hard to find. It's something along those lines anyway. With that being said, I strongly believe #18 could and would win against #17. It's fair to assume they're roughly equal in power even with the power difference they have. While it is stated that #17 is stronger, we don't know for sure how much stronger. Plus, the whole concept of the androids is played around them being identical, they're twins, they look alike, they have a similar style, outlook on things, same goal, somewhat similar personalities in a lot of aspects, similar techniques... they're basically 2 in 1 conceptually speaking, the 2 sides of the same coin that Cell needs to obtain in order to reach perfection. So I would personally assume their difference in powerlevel isn't so big that it would become a determinant factor in who would win in a battle between the 2. From my understanding, either one could win, but I think #18 would more easily have bigger chances at winning in a serious fight against her brother for one simple reason - unlike 17, 18 is a sensible, clever fighter. While 17 is driven by his own ego and arrogance, 18 is cool and collected. While 17 refused to believe someone could ever beat him and underestimated his rivals, 18 in more than one instance showed understanding towards the danger they were exposed to. One clear example is when Cell first showed up to absorb the androids, 17 never considered the possibility of being no match for Cell and never realized even after getting his a*** kicked that there was just no way he could beat him. As a result of his own arrogance, 17 kept fighting and got absorbed. 18 on the other hand is seen talking to 16 in the background, and when 16 tells her they need to escape because Cell is a lot superior, she understands and simply asks 16 "And what will you do?" -- this is moments before 16 steps up and joins the fight. Right after 17 got absorbed, 18 was VERY quick to threaten Cell saying she would kill herself if he moved any closer to her, which was imo the only smart thing she could have done in that instance. This type of quick thinking was seen in 18's character more than once. When Cell used 17's voice to persuade her, she got confused but very quickly found an incongruity in Cell's speech that made her know for sure she was being tricked. And these are just a few examples, I could also point out how quickly she came up with a strategy to win against Trunks and Goten during the world tournament, she knew that was the only effective, quick way she had of winning and she was determined to do so. All the moments I just mentioned in comparison to 17 only serve to highlight 18's perspicacity. And that to me would be the key factor in determining who would win if they ever fought. I think 18 could easily catch 17 off guard in his conviction that no one could ever beat him, and find an intelligent way to get the upper hand in the battle and win. That's not to say the battle wouldn't be very evenly matched, but 18's intelligence takes the cake for me personally. |

This is actually an interesting battle if you take two scenarios into account. Scenario 1: Android 17 (Android Arc) - Android 18 (Android Arc) It's pretty much a given that 17 wins here, because he is the strongest. 16 never says anything about his strength to the others, but that's in his nature. He's modest and wouldn't ruin 17's "fun". 18 is much more outspoken, so she would protest if she was stronger. Scenario 2: Android 17 (Android/Boo Arc, don't think it matters) - Android 18 (Boo Arc) I think 18 has a chance to beat her brother here. I think she has surpassed 17 by being with Krillin and close to the Zet-senshi, she has gained power and probably a better strategic mind too. I remember an interview with Toriyama where he said the androids can gain power like everyone else, so I like to think 18 surpassed 17. |

^ The thing is, we simply don't know how much stronger 17 is. I can't use this as fact for obvious reasons, but I personally believe he wasn't that much stronger to the point of dominating 18 in battle. I personally believe they were still very close power-wise, for the reasons I stated in my post above. Power isn't all that counts in battle, and 18 was shown being a lot clever than her brother ever since they were first introduced to the series. And it's not necessarily true that she would feel the need to protest against 17. For the most part they just kinda let him do whatever with minimal protesting. I mean, it is a fact that 17 was indeed stronger, so I'm not even at all trying to dispute that, my only point is that the fact that #17 repeated throughout the android saga he was the very best like no one ever was time and time again factually means very close to nothing as he believed he was untouchable almost until the end because of his cocky nature and stubbornness. The tl;dr version of my initial post is that I think a battle between the twins would be very even, and while 17 is officially stronger, I believe it's not by a very expressive margin, and that 18's intelligence and ability to think on her feet would be more determinant in the outcome of the match. |

#17 loses if he gets too cocky. If he fights smart he can win, he has a slight power advantage. But yeah if he just goes like LOL YOLO YOU CAN'T HURT ME he would probably lose. It would be a long, grueling fight either way. |

Did #18 show that she had a shield at all? She was admittedly never in a situation where a shield was practical or necessary, but if we assume that she doesn't, #17 takes the win easily, imo. |

#18 was never officially shown using the android barrier. It is highly likely that she was capable of doing it since the twins were programmed identically, but we don't actually see her doing it in the series. |
