I thought he was pretty spot on. This guy gets it. It's all basic stuff too. Things directors should be learning in film school. |

This is definitely an agreeable video. When I watch an action film, I want to believe in the hero, I want to relate to the hero, I want to hate the villain (and not in the "please get off my screen because you're annoying and offer nothing to the movie" kind of way), I want to feel like the hero could actually be in peril, I want to be engulfed by the story. I don't get any of that in today's movies. Maybe a little bit of fear for Steve's safety in Captain American 2 during the finale fight, but that's about it. In every other movie, I don't fear for the hero at all because I never get the idea that he's in trouble. I'm never given any reason to with how invincible these protagonists are portrayed nowadays. I'm hardly given any reason indulge in the story because it's so cut-and-dry and I just don't care. I think part of it is the world we live in today technologically. I can Google a movie and see news of three planned sequels with the hero in it, so it's like "well, now I know he's gonna live regardless of anything he's put through in this one." Spoilers everywhere. Relating to a hero is huge for me. I can relate to John McClain in the first Die Hard because he's an average cop trying to save the life of his wife and everybody unfortunate enough to be trapped in Nakatomi Tower. He's vulnerable at every turn and has clearly never faced a threat like Hans Gruber. There are numerous times where I'm able to believe he could actually die, namely when he's maneuvering in the elevator shaft and his gun breaks, letting him plummet several feet. I know it's not a movie, but I've recently binged on it. In Spartacus, Crixus is portrayed as an outright douchebag from the onset, but at some point in the first season we see that he actually has a soft side and feels love toward a fellow slave. Throughout the show, despite being known as one of the toughest champions in history, he's shown to not be invincible more than a handful of times, namely in his battle with Theokoles where he gains life-threatening wounds, and many other times where he's bested in battle or needs aid from his allies to escape a sticky situation. From an emotional standpoint, he shows through interactions with his female companion and fellow warriors that he can be an honorable and respectable man. That is a guy I can get behind because he's not invincible; he's human like myself, with faults and vulnerabilities, unfortunate as it is. Did anybody ever think any of the main Expendables would be offed in any of the three movies so far? Sly in particular suffers from his character being far too invincible to be believable. Sure, he gets help from the other guys (and actually loses to Stone Cold), but he pulls off the stupidest and most unbelievable victories and escapes that I don't ever wonder how he'll win, I just wonder when. It takes me out of the movie. All of the Expendables are like this: as a whole, they cannot be beaten even if they had to fight Zeus and the gods themselves. Anyhow, I'm going off on a rant now, so I should subside. Edited by Pyrus, Feb 12 2015, 09:43 AM.
