We socialized for the first few hours, which basically translated to a couple of loud girls talking at sixty miles a minute and the rest of us standing in a quiet little circle, immersed in our own thoughts. I tried to make political jokes at dinner, but my attempt at starting up a debate about legalizing marijuana was not received well (except by the birthday girl, who loves to talk politics). We went swing-dancing later. That was fun, and would've been even more fun if I was good at it. They gave a lesson beforehand, but I'm a klutz. I pity the young men who asked me to dance. Their toes are probably sore from all the times I stepped on them. And then, after we danced and went back to my friend's home: more socializing. I have a very small amount of energy when it comes to social functions, and it dwindles fast. By eleven o'clock at night, I was aching for a good, thick book and a solitary alcove. By two o'clock, I was about ready to lob the head off the next person who tried to engage me in conversation. That makes it sound as if I didn't enjoy the party, but I did. Really. It was nice to talk to my friend, try my hand at dancing, and stir up a conversation about the Ebola virus with the other girls. But, as an introvert, I just need to do a lot of recharging right now. I'm thinking The Complete Sherlock Holmes with a mug of herbal tea in hand and Chopin playing softly in the background.
