Without getting into it much, I think all types of strength are influenced by ki. So whoever has a higher amount of ki should also have a higher strength.

Usually toei clearly shows us the impact when someone punches the ground and they didn't with goku and king kais planet. I also think it would just be plain weird for him to actually hit the ground. When you punch and the person dodges you're not going to hit the ground. It's pretty hard to do that. To me it's illogical and clear his fist didn't actually touch the ground.

As for 40 tons, I think it's harder to lift something when it's attached to your wrist than it is when you can actually grip with your hand. And he's sweating too in that scene so for all we know he could've been at it for hours. Not saying he should be swinging around 100 tons as easily as he did but his strength is definitely at least a little better than what were shown

His lifting strength feats seem better in DragonBall than in Z. I hate that stupid '40 tons' scene. I guess the logical answer is that their strength is increased with ki. That 40 tons feat was what Goku's body could do without augmenting his strength with ki. I also read somebody's calculation for how hard Vegeta's 300x gravity training would actually be and it was much more complicated than "he weighs 300x his normal weight". It was all stuff about the force with which he would be hitting the ground when he fell etc etc. Plus there's now the feat of ssj3 Goku smashing through the immense density of King Kai's planet just with the shockwave of his punch.

40 tons is really gravity training, with no solid ground and with Bukujutsu
which was stated to make it harder, making it multiple times harder

the feats are really really good in db but they sorta fall off in dbz
if you would scale they would be what several thousands of tons by dbz but
thats not the case could be retconned idk
