Do you think it was necessary to have these two written in the story? Do they seem "extra-ish" to you? Could you live without reading about these upgrades? What could have been different or extended regarding these two Super Saiyan upgrades? Example of an extension: Super Saiyan 2 Grade II and III, etc Discussion about the necessity of Super Saiyan Grade II and III, for story-wise. Did the story need it? Was the author just trying to impress us with some cool stuff, instead of sticking with the original Super Saiyan? Edited by Professor Gohan, Dec 20 2014, 04:08 PM.

Super Saiyan among Super Saiyans

Super Saiyan Grade II was entertaining (Super Vegeta), but it wasn't necessary at all IMO. With a year's worth of training in a high-gravity, hazardous environment, Vegeta & Trunks still could've become strong enough to stomp Semi-Perfect Cell and get owned by Perfect Cell. Then, Goku and Gohan would've still surpassed them because sparring yields way more benefits than training alone. |

I guess so. SSJ had been used quite a lot already so it would make sense to use something new at that point of time. |

It was necessary to show how much better Goku was than Vegeta and Trunks. If they hadn't found/used the forms, then all we'd know is that Goku is better at training than Vegeta, a fact that was already made apparent in the past. By introducing the forms, it allowed for Goku (and to a lesser extent Vegeta) show how knowledgeable they were about training, transforming and fighting. Basically, it was necessary as an example of Goku's skill and knowledge. |

Nagito above me said it perfectly Also, i think it was part of the build up for seeing the difference between just charging up and gohan actually transforming into a ssj2 |

No, I don't think they should have been included and their inclusion actually bothers me. SSJ Grade 2 was shown to have no downsides; there was no speed decrease and the power boost was substantial. I don't understand why no one besides Vegeta and Trunks used it. |

Yes, they served their purpose very well. A big theme of the Cell arc was Goku and his crew trying to figure out the best way to use and improve upon Super Saiyan. Grades 2 and 3 were the results of trial-and-error in that regard, and were the "prototypes" for Super Saiyan 2 in a way. |

They give the arc a benefit by speed factors here. |

Because they apparently consume too much ki. It's an informed flaw in that we never see this |

They were necessary in a trial-and-error sort of way, and I found them entertaining enough. Who knew making your muscles huge in a show involving insanely buff dudes was a bad thing? Pft! |
