Does Goku nearly killing Burter in TFS count? He was having a tender moment with Jeice and then boom. As for canon, I know the Cell Jrs were bad guys and deserved it, but holy s***, Gohan goes overboard |

I love how people only care about the sadistic douches and don't give a damn about the good guys. I am not exempt from that |

I didn't like Vegeta dying, even though he was wished back... still thought it sucked. Even though he deserved it, I didn't want to see Frieza die. |

Vegeta's deaths. Especially when he was brutally beaten and then killed by Frieza. |

In reference to Vegeta's deaths, I never cared, because he had acted like an asshat before hand. Against Freeza, he talks big and boasts how he's the Super Saiyan, showing no remorse at all for hitting Dende. Freeza beating him down was pretty well deserved. As for Boo, he had just finished slaughtering several hundred people while smiling like a maniac because he was feeling inadequate. Yeah |

I think it's important to take Vegeta's history into account, though. From a very young age, Vegeta was told about the Super Saiyan legend. His father expected him to attain it. He was supposed to be the one who would wrest the Saiyans from Frieza's grip. And then his father gave him to Frieza when he was still a child, putting him in an environment where any show of weakness was exploited. In Frieza's army, survival was paramount. Showing mercy to anyone, letting down his guard in front of anyone, would have gotten Vegeta killed. He had to adapt to his surroundings and become ruthless in order to live long enough to claim his birthright. And then his father was murdered and his planet destroyed by the very tyrant who enslaved the Saiyans (and their prince) in the first place. Vegeta was only five at the time. Imagine being five years old, and without a home other than the cold environment produced by the Planet Trade Organization. Without a father figure besides Nappa and the other callous soldiers. The notion that mercy = weakness had been drilled into Vegeta from his toddler years. It makes sense that, by the time he was an adult, he'd be a cutthroat individual with little regard for the lives of others. Things such as love and kindness were alien to him. I'm not excusing his mistakes, but I do consider the context vital. That's what makes him such a great character in my eyes: after all of the trauma and violence he's seen and endured, after all of the bloodshed and indoctrination, he is still able to find redemption. It's a slow, painful process, hence his relapse in the Buu Saga. But really, I think he's the most "human" out of all the characters -- which is ironic, considering how proud he is of his Saiyan heritage. Think about it. He struggles. He makes mistakes. He holds grudges. He mourns over broken dreams, clings to them, chases them doggedly -- only to watch them crumble again and again. Yet he still forges on, determined to place his mark on history. Somehow, he finds love along the way. These emotions creep up on him and, before he realizes it, there are people in his life whom he wants to care for and protect. He fights against it at first because he isn't used to it. It's unfamiliar and strange. It makes him question everything he knows. He thinks he's free from the bondage of his youth, but the memories still haunt his every step. True freedom comes when he puts aside his pride to save his family and save the Earth. His first death is a step in his journey. The dam breaks and he feels for the first time in years. |
