First off let's look at the reviews by game critics and users score.

1. Mass Effect 2: 95.77%

2. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim: 95.15%

3. The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion: 93.29%

4. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic: 93.19%

5. World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King: 92.68%

6. Final Fantasy VII: 92.35%

7. Dragon Age: Origins: 90.63%

8. Dragon Age: Inquisition: 90.07%

^ The reviews from critics seem to be very solid.

But unfortunately the sales don't reflect the reviews.

Final Fantasy VII: 9.62 million units sold worldwide.
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim: 8.15 million units sold worldwide.
World of Warcraft: 10.07 million units sold worldwide.

Besides the top three above, majority of the RPG games are lucky if they sell 1 or 2 million.

Mass Effect 2 (Xbox 360): 3.06 million units sold worldwide.
Dragon Age Inquisition (PS4) (as of 22nd Nov 2014): 466,347 thousand units sold worldwide.
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic: 2.19 million units sold.

Is RPG games dying or are never that popular to begin with?

No

find stats for rpg games from a decade or two ago and compare it with those. dont really have much to go by just from knowing the # of units sold over the past few years.

Nah, they aren't dying, you just have to look in the right places. I mean, Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire sold over 2 million within the first few days of release, iirc. Plus, games don't need a huge number of sales to be classed as a success or a profit, so there's no danger of them going any where anytime soon

No. They've hardly ever been the biggest selling games even in their heyday. In the 2D era it was platformers and fighting games that dominated the market. When 3D came about it changed from platformers to shooters but even platformers still outsold rpgs.

So I think it's the same as ever.

If Ruby and Sapphire sold to DS's that number would go up so much higher :(

I know for a fact that I've been oaying those a***** at Lucas Arts for 3 years straight playing that Star Wars the Old Republic game. It gets downloaded more than carbon copy purchased. And they more than made their 200 million dollars back in ever so certain. 60$ a game, 15$ a month. They broke even 2 months in. As long as there are nerds, there will be RPG!

Would you consider the zelda games RPGs or at least partially RPGs.. I know they've had some good sales to carry the rpg banner. But even zelda games are in decline when it comes to sales. Bee. There done that.

I don't think they're dying, they just can't compare to FPS (and sports games too). RPGs are never going to overtake FPS and sports games because it's more 'hardcore' gaming. You have to really immerse yourself in the game, it's world and it's story. FPS and sports games are easy to pick up and play and don't take much effort brain-wise to enjoy, so they're going to be more popular. The majority of game sales are casual gamers, since most people use it more as one outlet for enjoyment, that is competing with many others for their limited free time outside work, rather than their major interest. 'Hardcore' gamers are more likely to look for games with long storylines, complicated gameplay and characters (of which RPGs fall under), whereas the casual gamers lean more towards the pick up and play FPS and sports games.

Basically Destiny is genius. Falls under both categories basically.

Except that there's no long or even good story to be had :p

The idea of Destiny is genius but the finished product is laughable faux MMO unbalanced shooter with no story.

I'm not sure I'd class Zelda as an RPG. Technically speaking every game is as you always play a role...but still it lacks elements like a leveling up system or a long story with tons of dialogue nor do they have any real difficulty to them or bosses with a million HP to your 9999 that you need to majorly strategize against.

Anyway no I wouldn't say the genre is dying but some RPG's, like Final Fantasy are dying...after like 30 games and remasters I think it's about time anyway.
Unless XV saves it but I doubt it.
All went to hell when they prioritized making overly complex graphics, girly girls and girly men over setting, story and characters.
Frickin' Vanille, what even is that.

There aren't a lot of good ones these days but the ones that are sell great.

I've never played Destiny (I don't have any consoles), but it seems lame.
I love building PCs. If you have any questions about it feel free to ask. I can help you with almost any kind of PC you'd want to build.
