Why is BT3 so expensive?

I originally bought BT3 back in 2008 for $30. Last week I was looking on ebay for DB merchandise and I came across a used copy selling for almost $80. I searched for other results and there were loads of copies all going between the $60 to $80 range. The first two games are only commanding prices under $20. So what gives? When did BT3 suddenly become such a desired artifact?

It's out of production as far as I know, and it's considered the best DBZ game by many.

More people consider B3 to be the best DBZ video game ever.
It's usually a toss-up between the two, but B3 was released with B1 in the HD collection a couple years ago or so. However, it is rare to find an original copy of the individual game, especially with the edition with the Greatest Hits cover.

There was a special edition of B3 released that included a collectible Dragon Ball and the strategy guide. My friend bought it. Haven't seen him in years, so I'm not sure if he still has it or not.

Yes, but then I wasn't really implying most people think BT3's the best as I said many.

On the UK ebay you can get it for under £30, which is roughly $45. That's searching for all console copies

You think that's bad? See if you can find a copy of "Conker's Bad Fur Day" for under half a grand.

It truly was a Shawshank redemption

Out of interest I looked and there's one on ebay for £180 'buy it now', and £105 on Amazon. Both used though. Amazon also has BT3 for £25 used.

I think I've still got my BT3 for PS2 around somewhere. Played the hell out of that game.

Easily one hell of a game too. It's a pity that it didn't have very good online, I'd love to actually have a Budokai with a Budokai game.

Truthfully I don't understand BT3's popularity. Sure it's good, but it's certainly not as good as everyone says it is.

Atari lost distribution rights for Dragon Ball games years ago so only limited copies of it exist plus Tenkaichi 3 is the commercially successful Dragon Ball game to date.
